The primary in staunchly liberal New York is likely to determine who becomes mayor in November's election.

The former governor's loss marks the "biggest upset in modern NYC history," Trip Yang, a political strategist, told the BBC.

"A massive win for Zohran Mamdani that shows that when Donald Trump is President, New York Democrats want to see their leaders fight with enthusiasm and courage, and that's what Zohran showed voters."

In an interview with the New York Times, Cuomo said he was still examining whether he would run in the general election in November on the independent line.

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but wasn't it obvious that Zohran would win? He was the clear frontrunner, and Cuomo is a zombie.

No, never underestimate the ability of capital owners to ratfuck good people out of winning a “democratic” election.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

So, the socialist won, and you're saying he couldn't win??

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 6 points 1 month ago

No, they’re saying don’t trust pre-voting polling.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

When did they say that?

[-] crusa187@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

I’m saying it’s not over until after the general.

With that said, even this is an amazing victory and I’m celebrating. Happy for New Yorkers!

[-] somehacker@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago

Polls were much closer than the result. Within 3-4% of each other if memory serves.

[-] No_Ones_Slick_Like_Gaston@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Also money raised last minute and an avalanche of "figures" going for Cuomo.

[-] IndigoLarry@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I no longer trust any polls. Feel free to try to convince me otherwise, but in my experience (anecdotal, I know) they have been wrong in many cases. Further, I think they can do more harm than good. For example, if a poll suggests a given candidate will likely win easily, it could -- and I would argue -- does discourage voters from going out of their way to cast their ballot. Sidebar: Voting in the US doesn't have to be so fucking hard. Election days -- especially in November -- should be a holiday.

[-] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago

No, he wasn’t. It was fairly close until recently because Cuomo is a really well known figure in NY politics and Mamdani is not.

[-] SmilingSolaris@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Cuomo was leading the polls by 9-16 %. This is a massive upset. Fuck polls

[-] IndigoLarry@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

THANK YOU! Finally someone with some sense. I feel like I've been taking crazy pills.

This should not be "stunning" anyone. Cuomo is a creepy old man, Zohran is an equal but opposite reaction to Trump -- and the one that NYC needs.

So many major news outlets are busy kissing Trump and establishment Dems' asses because they have become dependent on the same wealthy donors that prop them up. I'm really worried for the future when I see this headline over and over "SHOCK" ... What's shocking is how all of these media companies have their head so far up their ass. I really hope this encourages them to get their shit together and report what you see, not what they think rich people want to hear.

[-] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

I am so proud of NY right now. I hope they keep up the momentum and show the rest of the country what progressive values can accomplish for regular people.

November’s election.

Eugh I don't want to put up with more reocurring posts across all communities about some american city election that last till november.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago

This is a US based community. You may want to block it if that bothers you.

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

sure, but my comment still stands that this shit is going to pollute the rest of the current events/news based communities until november.

good luck with your shitshow country though.

[-] doomcanoe@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

Hey thanks! Good luck with your shitshow country too!

They're likely a Canadian.

[-] assaultpotato@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Hey now why are we catching strays? Dude's getting dog piled with downvotes on a Canadian instances community. They're probably a Euro, they love to complain about US news cycles.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yeah, he's probably russian. I've done the ultimate test on who's stalking me and they proved to be russian most of the time.

You might be wondering what the ultimate test is. Here, I'll show you. It never fails to make me laugh anyway, and if the downvotes pile on, they're definitely russian. You're welcome to use it yourself because it's a great video. It might be because it has russian in the name too, but honestly, who tf cares. It takes a bit to get going (*about 30 seconds), but it's worth it.

Did you look at where you are?

It's a Canadian ~~community~~ instance, and the article is from the BBC. Guess what the first B stands for the (hint: not America, and neither is this a "US based community")

This is my community, lol. Did you look at where you are?

[-] phx@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Correction, Canadian instance.

sh.itjust.works is Canadian.

So I guess a better question might be: why did you join a Canadian instance to create a generically named community about American politics?

Did you think "gee, sh.itjustworks is a funny name, I'm going to sign up there", was it more a land-grab for a high-level keyword "politics" as a community, instead of creating it as "uspolitics" or "americanpolitics". Or maybe you just assumed American politics were the one that mattered most, even on a non-American instance?

Whatever your reasoning, now Canadians who signed up for this Canadian instance see your American news in their feed under the "politics" heading. It's not even "American politics relevant to Canadians"

Not really a great look.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Gatekeeping instances where the guys are great and invited me when I was on reddit? Another one that needs a little struggle in their life if you think this is worth a diatribe about. You really need to block this community. I can help with that if you keep going.

[-] phx@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

It's cool that you were invited. Also ironic that you chose to make the "politics" community here all about USA and now level accusations of gatekeepering?

Maybe it doesn't feel like a big deal to you, but I think it's reasonable for Canadians to feel concerned that foreign content/news tends to overshadow our own, especially given how the USGov is treating foreign relations these days.

American corps already run a lot of news outlets here, dominate the entertainment industry, and have no qualms about throwing their weight around. Lemmy was looking like a place for other countries such a Canada to maybe have a bit of space for our own news and content while still being connected to the world, but it didn't take long for feeds to be overwhelmed here too.

A little room to breathe or at least maybe some consideration of where this community "lives" doesn't feel like a lot to ask. If you consider that a "diatribe" and want to toss your weight around that's not much I can do to stop you, but it also kinda proves my point.

No one cares

Now I hate US defaultism as much as the next guy but this isn’t a case of it.

The BBC posts articles regarding the entire world, it’s not entirely fixated on just the UK
