Critics have said the US decision to retreat from the region has led to a greater likelihood of conflict

As Israeli jets struck targets in Iran on Friday morning, the US moved quickly to distance itself from Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to target Tehran in an escalation that threatens an all-out war in the Middle East.

The unilateral strikes indicated a collapse of Donald Trump’s efforts to restrain the Israeli prime minister and almost certainly scuttled Trump’s efforts to negotiate a deal with Iran that would prevent the country from seeking a nuclear weapon.

It also will probably lead to an Iranian retaliation that could develop into a larger war between Israel and Iran, a new conflict that Trump has publicly sought to avoid.

Implying that the United States in any way had attempted to actually stop Israel is journalistic misconduct.

[-] eldavi@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

and implying that the united states didn't help is willful ignorance at best since its diplomats worked to convince the iranians that it wasn't going to happen.

[-] torrentialgrain@lemm.ee 18 points 1 year ago

Yeah what the fuck is this, it’s obvious to everyone that the US supports what Israel is doing.

[-] dutchkimble@lemy.lol 4 points 1 year ago

It’s probably opposite, where Israel was told to do it in order to continue getting support (I say this based on my expert tv show/movie knowledge)

Trump needs a war he didn't start that he can get involved in so he can claim to be a wartime president. "Can't hold an election when we are at war!"

[-] CMLVI@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

This also fulfills the anti-prophecy of him calling himself the most peaceful president ever. He only ever presides over peaceful times.

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 year ago

There's also a video going around now of him in 2011 claiming Obama was going to start a war with Iran, due to his incompetence at negotiating, right before the election to boost his popularity.

He's projecting more then an imax movie theater.

"USA unable to restrain themselves from giving bombs to Israel"

"USA unable to restrain their ally from doing exactly what they want“

[-] torrentialgrain@lemm.ee 27 points 1 year ago

One of the dumbest headlines I’ve read all year. The US administration is supporting all of this.

The unilateral strikes indicated a collapse of Donald Trump’s efforts to restrain the Israeli prime minister

What sane person ever believed that Trump was willing or able to restrain Israel or its leadership?

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

He is definitely able to do it. Over the past months he's shown that he can act unilaterally on pretty much anything, especially on foreign policy, and no one stops him. He could stop weapons shipments to Israel tonight and if that happened Israel wouldn't be able to support it's 4 front war on the region and have to come to the negotiating table. He just doesn't because he's a coward and afraid of the Israel lobby.

He's already stopped aid to ukraine, no reason he can't do the same for Israel.

[-] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

You're forgetting one key thing. Republicans hate Muslims more than they hate Jews.

Also, their nutty evangelical base believes that Jews need to be in Bethlehem in order for the second coming of Jesus to happen or something.

Everyone has learned that Trump is an idiot. He can easily be manipulated and controlled. They all know this. Trump is the only one that doesn’t see it. He isn’t strong. They just let him think he is.

I wonder what happens if everyone in the region starts lobbing missiles at isreal. How long can they maintain their air defense under a saturated attack? It takes time to reload those systems. A dumb missile launched in isreals direction requires a expensive one to intercept it. All it takes is the powers in the region to collectively decide they have taken enough shit from them and isreal is screwed. Not that they don't deserve it. You can bet trump wont get involved. He needs those troops to put a knee on our collective necks.

[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 8 points 1 year ago

I don't think anyone in the region has any solidarity with Iran.

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I know they all have their hatred of one another. It would only take a two month love affair to do isreal in. Probably not going to happen but you never know.

[-] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago

Wasn't that kinda the idea behind the 6 day war?

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That was egypt and jordan. Not all of them. At that time iran was a US puppet state along with several others. Egypt like the way things are now. So there is no way they would get involved.

[-] gcheliotis@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

AFAIK they’ve tried that before and Israel beat all of them. There’s no contest.

[-] GhostPain@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

And lets not forget that bible-thumping Evangelical Zionists are a large part of the reason Israel has such free reign and support in American politics. Especially now that they've completely infiltrated the highest echelons of power in DC.

This death cult want an all out war in the Middle East to lead to the End Times.

Trump is the willing dupe.

[-] MetalMachine@feddit.nl 9 points 1 year ago

The US never actually tried to stop Israel. They have the levers but didn't do any of them. From how trump is speaking about the attack, it seems like he wanted this to put more pressure when it comes to the negotiations

[-] OmegaLemmy@discuss.online 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

This makes it seem like USA had no say in this when they have directly worked with netanyahu's government to keep a tight grip in middle east and is aiding the war effort from closed doors

[-] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 8 points 1 year ago

Fail to restrain!!! He fully backup israel war in iran

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I'd be surprised if he didn't actively encourage it.
Unless of course he wanted the privilege of starting it himself? Because a war could solve some of his problems, and pave the way for a MAGA dictatorship.

[-] kandoh@reddthat.com 7 points 1 year ago

I'd love to know what happened to trump on that camp david visit. There was a real tune change after that.

[-] Bwaz@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Trump is worse than worthless as a negotiator.

[-] Curiousfur@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I guess this explains the 20000 anti-drone missiles the US admin diverted from Ukraine to the "middle east"

[-] KulunkelBoom@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Trump can't even grasp his dick much less foreign diplomacy.

[-] caffinatedone@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

“collapse of trumps efforts to restrain netanyahu”.. right. If netanyahu did this against US pleas, then why is the US shooting down the Iranian reprisal? Seems like they’d take trump more seriously he didn’t just support them regardless.

[-] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

The most dangerously incompetent man for the moment

[-] DarkDecay@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Lmao. Trump is unable to restrain his fuckin stupid hair on a windy day. He can't do shit to influence a single world leader anywhere.

[-] Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

unilateral

How do we know it wasn't bilateral?

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Again. Not the first time for US.

Please stop meddling in foreign affairs.
