Israeli authorities screened footage of Hamas's October 7 atrocities to Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and other pro-Palestinian flotilla participants upon their arrival in Ashdod on Monday, shortly after the IDF intercepted their ship, the Madleen, in international waters.

According to Defense Minister Israel Katz, the activists refused to continue watching the film after seeing the brutality of the attacks.

"These antisemitic flotilla activists closed their eyes to the truth and once again proved they prefer the murderers over the victims,” Katz said. “They continue to ignore the atrocities committed by Hamas against Jewish and Israeli women, the elderly, and children.”

The activists were given the option to sign a voluntary departure form or face arrest after 96 hours. Among those refusing to leave is French MEP Rima Hassan.

Hassan has previously drawn wide criticism for her denial that the Bibas family, excluding Yarden Bibas, were murdered, her claim that the October 7 massacre was "legitimate" and her insistence that Palestinians in Europe should be allowed to join the "resistance."

Peaceful protestor held at gunpoint refuses to watch violent propaganda.

As such, branded as hypocrite.

Modern politics.

Delivering baby formula to certain people seen specifically as a form of protest by all media.

Modern politics.

Is no one going to say or do anything about the fact that Israel illegally "intercepted" another ship in international waters?

Also arrested for what? They weren't even under Israeli jurisdiction when picked up.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 45 points 1 month ago

Sweden threw her under the bus, along with the rest of the West.

All legal under the letter of international law pertaining to military engagement. That it is in international waters is irrelevant legally speaking. See the legal grounds for the sinking of Belgrano for a clearer example. As long as they can think of a halfway credible excuse that they think the vessel will cause aid to their enemy, they have the right to interdict it in international waters.

[-] ctrl_alt_esc@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 month ago

The Belgrano was a military ship, this one isn't. So even if you're right regarding military vessels, I doubt the same would hold for a civil one.

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Distinction isn’t made. A civilian ship could be conducting or supporting military operations (see Q ships, zelensky’s “civilian” container trucks etc).

As with many things, it basically comes down to who has the bigger gun. Until a naval power pulls its finger out and starts escorting relief ships, Israel is at liberty to seize them.

[-] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 8 points 1 month ago

Which halfway credible evidence do they have? They have none. The blockade is illegal so intercepting it is illegal too

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 4 points 1 month ago

Their twisted argument is that the terrorists live among the people therefore any action against the terrorists also harms the people, and any effort to aid the people aids the terrorists. So aid = terrorism.

[-] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 7 points 1 month ago

Tou said it it's a twisted argument. Nobody believe it so international law apply here

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

And international law says they can sieze the boat.

[-] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 11 points 1 month ago

No, it doesn't say that

[-] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

No. It doesn't

[-] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

That's not an argument compatible with international law though, which was your original claim.

Sorry I'm late but this is not entirely correct, they were arrested in what's considered High Seas in the Mediterranean, which has clear rules from the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. See 3.4 Maritime Boundaries

This is quite literally the plot to A Clockwork Orange.

[-] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

At leat in A Clockwork Orange the point of the footage wasn't to try to persuade them that violence is good.

[-] sem 7 points 1 month ago

How did it end, again? I forget

[-] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

There are two endings. In both, the brainwashing treatment temporarily prevents the main character from committing violence.

In the movie after he tries to commit suicide he wakes up in hospital and the effect of the brainwashing has worn off so he goes back to violence.

In the book the government undo the brainwashing in a bid to get him to support them but he later loses the urges all on his own.

[-] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 1 points 1 month ago

He was cured, all right.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 57 points 1 month ago

They refused to watch a propaganda video 🙄

[-] teagrrl@lemmy.ml 39 points 1 month ago

There's no footage from October 7th that comes close to what happens in Gaza every fucking day.

Not gonna believe this hasbara rag unless they show unedited video of the flotilla participants not watching the tapes. And likewise for everything else in the article. 💩

"Lost its radio signal" As if we didn't have footage of them jamming

"Blockade to avoid weapon delivery"

"Ship carrying humanitarian aid"

"These antisemitic flotilla"

"The IDF prepared in advance to intercept the ship before it could enter Israeli territorial waters; "

Enough said

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 9 points 1 month ago

Lindsey Graham advocated for worse.

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 27 points 1 month ago

Do they think the floridly theatrical condescension makes them look like the good guys here?

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 24 points 1 month ago

"These antisemitic flotilla activists closed their eyes to the truth and once again proved they prefer the murderers over the victims,” Katz said. “They continue to ignore the atrocities committed by Hamas against Jewish and Israeli women, the elderly, and children.”

They refused to watch videos of atrocities that aren't part of the videos, such as the murders of babies (unfounded) and mass sexual violence (unfounded). They must hate Jews. They certainly aren't protesting the genocide of Palestinians. It can't be that. /s

[-] DandomRude@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

This unlawful attempt at forced brainwashing is truly scandalous and absolutely intolerable with its repugnant double standards.

No one disputes that the terrorist attack by Hamas was brutal.

Nevertheless, this by no means justifies the genocide being committed by Israel. There are also horrific images of this, of starving children, cold blooded murder of civilians and unbearable suffering - and Israel is even using every means at its disposal to prevent the world from seeing the full extent of their own atrocities.

If Israel were to adhere even remotely to international law and human rights, Thunberg would not be there.

It is absurd that this country continues to portray itself as the victim. They are the perpetrators and responsible for crimes against humanity.

These savages who represent Israel are truly the scum of the earth.

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Lol what. > 33% active duty IDF soldiers killed. Almost no children.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 month ago

Hamas wanted hostages, not bodies.

Don't give an inch. The brutality came from the Israeli side. They fired on their own people to stop them from being taken hostage.

[-] Thebigguy@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Isreal knew Oct 7 was coming.

Source: I know this sounds crazy but trust me

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 41 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They did, it has been proven beyond any doubt because they openly admitted it. They also willfully ignored warnings from military officials. Also the pager operation was already in progress months before Oct 7 so they were planning all out war with the whole region for a while.

[-] Thebigguy@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 month ago

Yep, they also purposefully moved the festival closer to Gaza. The organisers is known to have Mossad connections

[-] Bouzou@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

"Yeah, I agree, that is horrible. I am literally just trying to keep more innocent people from suffering and dying..."

[-] Bwaz@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Well, those Gaza children shouldn't have committed those atrocities.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

"Hostage refuses to be psychologically tortured by war criminals"

[-] DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Are the Jewish nazis trying to guilt trip them into helping their genocide? Before you even say anything what's the difference between a free range cage and a cage? The comfort level of the animal. A lot easier to gun down when you say it's safe here

[-] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 month ago

So Israel is doing the „But they are doing it too!” thing

Are we in kindergarten or what?

[-] jwiggler@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

Who's posting this Israeli propaganda

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 month ago

I'm assuming everyone here is smart enough to recognize and filter out the propaganda.

What is left is Israelis boasting about their own war crimes.

[-] flandish@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

wouldn’t the footage be of defenders coming in to boot out the invading zionists?
