Don't know what the exact cause was/is for this big surge - but I am glad to see it. No matter what personal problems people may have with the main devs, they are doing great work on the platform.

https://join-lemmy.org/donate

https://liberapay.com/Lemmy

Also of interest, since this is a good place to plug things, other threadiverse things:

https://liberapay.com/PieFed/

And I couldn't find a way to donate to mbin, in lieu of that:

https://docs.joinmbin.org/contributing/

EDIT: The creator of mbin gave a link in the comments: https://melroy.org/donate.html

I really thought this was an elaborate Saddam hiding meme

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 weeks ago

That’s what he thought too.

[-] Zentron@lemm.ee 16 points 2 weeks ago

Yeep , same ... came here to post the pic but someone beat me to it lol

Great, now I won't be able to unsee that ever again!

[-] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 28 points 2 weeks ago

I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself.

[-] lol_idk@lemmy.ml 24 points 2 weeks ago

I came here to say this

What is this? I don't get it.

[-] SoleInvictus 9 points 2 weeks ago

Compare the shape of the graph to the shape of the graphic which represented Saddam Hussein. They're vaguely similar.

[-] turtlesareneat@discuss.online 9 points 2 weeks ago

*near perfect 8-bit representation

[-] juliorapido@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 weeks ago

This one still has the head!

[-] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Glad, I am not the only one seeing Saddam Hussain everywhere

The fact that that was my first thought is the reason I will be touching grass for the remainder of the day.

Dev posted few weeks ago about donations being a little short and having lowered making it more difficult to support development. A lot of people then started to donate or increase their financial support.

Edit : for reference https://lemmy.ml/post/29579005

Ah, yes, that was right at the time where I was having peak personal stress/health issues and only did the bare minimum admin work on Lemmy and my other platforms, no wonder I missed it. Glad to see people actually responded to the call to action, though!

[-] wit@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago

I hope you are doing better OP!

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 66 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I see Saddam Hussein.

Also, we're doing our part. They're still halfway from their nodest goal though.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 47 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Oh yea I started donating all right...to PieFed (I don't even have a PF account), .world and .cafe.

I won't be giving a penny to them until I see some major changes in regards to .ml as so many people called for on every other version of the donation thread that wasn't .ml

[-] ColdSideOfYourPillow@piefed.social 25 points 2 weeks ago

You can still donate to Lemmy without supporting ML! From https://threadiverse.link/lemmy.ml/post/29579005:

Update: For those of you who want to support Lemmy development without financing the hosting of lemmy.ml, know that the hosting is paid exclusively through OpenCollective. You can see the payment details at this link. This means donations through all other platforms (Liberapay, Ko-fi, Patreon, Crypto) are exclusively for Lemmy development, and not a single cent goes to lemmy.ml hosting.

Edit: Liberapay is the preferable donation option, as it has very low fees and is also open source.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 32 points 2 weeks ago

As was brought up in those threads, but it's simply not good enough, it's just paying for .ml with extra steps (e.g. through their pay/salary rather than directly funding hosting costs)

Do they have a link where your money doesn't go towards moderation costs?

No. Because they're scammers. They want you to pay them so they can ban people for being against genocide all day.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

This is a bold lie that Nutomic keeps pushing. These donations go directly to Nutomic and Dessalines. The servers are not the problem. The problem is the admins who happen to be the devs.

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 14 points 2 weeks ago

We get it, you hate Lemmy as a platform. You try so hard to make it less appealing by splitting discussions on posts by reposting stuff needlessly. Really makes Lemmy look even more unoriginal and boring seeing the same posts 3 times in different places all the time. Then you spearhead some movement to try to get people to not donate to Lemmy development at all, making it harder for these people who are trying to make Lemmy their life's work to be able to even survive. It's actually gross.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago

I have been so very clear on this being about .ml and the admins in charge of it that it's obvious you're just posting a straw man.

Lol, no: https://lemmy.world/comment/16087942

Because they use the .ml instance and it's influence as being associated as the "Official Dev Instance" to push their Tankie "ideology", to include spreading dangerous misinformation and propaganda

They could solve it almost overnight by turning over .ml to a new as fair and unbiased as possible admin team. As was also brought up in those donations threads. In fact to paraphrase another user: "Devs should do dev work and not mod work and admins/mods should do mod work and not dev work".

[-] Eldritch@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

Lol to accuse you of not liking Lemmy as a platform. It doesn't get much more strawman. Lol you're one of the most frequent posters I see on Lemmy in general 😝

Weird how if you are an asshole to your users it makes them into enemies.

I joined Lemmy with every intention to contribute and make a significant donation as well. But after getting banned and dogpiled for daring to say things like "Russia shot down a civilian airplane" and "the ML theory you are referencing does say what you claim it says," I'm also here to say the fediverse will be better without cringe keyboard warriors like Dessalines and transphobes like Nutomic being involved with it. There are other projects to support.

[-] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 44 points 2 weeks ago

I'm Melroy, mbin creator. You can donate via https://melroy.org/donate.html for now.

[-] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 22 points 2 weeks ago

Also you didn't link the correct project url. That is another project called mbin. This is our public site instead: https://joinmbin.org/

Whoops, corrected now. I was already surprised I had gotten a result not hosted on joinmbin.org - but just assumed maybe the docs were hosted somewhere else for some reason. Should have taken the extra minutes to check what exactly I was linking there.

[-] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 7 points 2 weeks ago

You have been forgiven haha ;)

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 38 points 2 weeks ago

They posted asking for people to stand up for them. Dirty communists like myself (okay, and others) stood up and pushed that message everywhere we could. Because you have to want freedom and democracy. It does not come for free.

They posted asking for people to stand up for them.

Ah, that makes sense - I missed that, but have been happily giving them a bit of money for years now. I don't have a lot to spare, but every little bit helps with crowdfunded stuff like that.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 11 points 2 weeks ago

Same here. I dont have a lot atm but I try to give what I can and also help out with work.

[-] haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 6 points 2 weeks ago

That joke was actually pretty funny. But what were those other posts mate? Show a little respect to the people giving you the opportunity to post here at all.

[-] Genius@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

No. People can do both good and bad things.

This reminded me that I wanted to support. Just did a yearly payment. Thanks for the amazing work guys! I can't believe a just a few people can maintain such an amazing ecosystem. One day people will understand that, in 48 hours, we could destroy the entire gafam system and replace it with a fair alternative: the Fediverse and FLOSS.

[-] crumbguzzler5000@feddit.org 20 points 2 weeks ago

I use Lemmy daily, the least I can do is throw a bit of cash at the Devs!

Honestly, even if it's 2p a month, it'll add up and ensure the longevity of the service at the heart of what we all use daily.

[-] JustJack23@slrpnk.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

Intended to do it long time ago, finally committed!

I have spent way too much time on lemmy this past two years, it is worth the money.

[-] Peter_Arbeitslos@feddit.org 9 points 1 week ago

Interesting. feddit.org also saw a sudden peak in new users registering in the same time period.

[-] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Awesome.

I have a monthly contribution set up. Subscribing is way better than dealing with ads.
