I hate calling. I also hate when someone calls me with important info. Bro just give me a well written overview, with ordered lists and shit, so I have a single source of truth to have as reference later, and can serve as a basis for our future discussions.

[-] Sc00ter@lemm.ee 14 points 5 days ago

Reference for later

Exactly this. Ive got too much shit in my brain to remember this. Not to mention, you called while im at [place] and cant dedicate brain power to you. Remember this isnt the days of land lines where you had to be home, and available to answer the phone, and most people kept note pads right next to the phone so they could write down that information

[-] grahamja@reddthat.com 2 points 4 days ago

I send detailed e-mails then go to people's desks so I know they understand. Then follow up with another e-mail so they can be held accountable. If I can't make it to their work center, I am calling and making sure nothing is open to interpretation. People ignore e-mails and long work group chats all the time...

[-] Prox@lemmy.world 34 points 5 days ago

Does anyone here answer their phone? I don't even have my ringer turned on.

[-] thurstylark@lemm.ee 29 points 5 days ago

Only for family and coworkers, and the latter only when I'm working.

If I don't have your number, you can attempt to convince me of your importance via voicemail, or text me like fucking normal.

[-] kwr112233@feddit.dk 11 points 5 days ago

I’ve this theory that mostly Americans never answer the phone due to can-spam laws and such.

I usually answer if i see a call and it is convenient, but phone is always on silent.

[-] SaltyIceteaMaker@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 days ago

nah if i dont know your number you have to text me/ mail me

[-] kooks_only@lemmy.ca 31 points 5 days ago

Sends instagram message to business account

[-] remotelove@lemmy.ca 9 points 5 days ago

Unrelated question: Is the markdown above broken for anyone else? There are random cases where it's broken for my client and am trying to to nail down the conditions better for the dev. (I am on Connect)

[-] kooks_only@lemmy.ca 12 points 5 days ago

I’m on thunder.

test italics

test bold

[-] remotelove@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Thanks! That worked as expected. Odd. I'll just point the dev to this and a couple of other threads I have seen this happen. Cheers!

[-] Hjalamanger@feddit.nu 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I'm using Connect and it's broken for me to. I wonder if it's just MD with underscores that's broken?

test (underscore)
bold test (underscore s)
test
bold test

EDIT: it wasn't that. This works, at least for me

[-] scintilla@lemm.ee 1 points 4 days ago

I'm on interstellar and the spoilers just seemingly randomly don't work sometimes. happened when I was on boost to.

[-] Bunnylux@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

This is so pathetic and annoying. Just fucking call, it's not hard, stop babying adults. Not all millennials and Gen Z live in constant fear and helplessness.

[-] superniceperson@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago

A) fuck you, learn to read.

B) I treat others how I want to be treated. As in no randomly forced to talk to someone and instead able to interact on my terms.

[-] Bunnylux@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

The world doesn't exist to serve you. Sometimes you have to make a call.

[-] superniceperson@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago

Nah I'm just not. Never before in history were you expected to just interrupt someone's day that's thousands of miles away.

I'd rather send a letter written with a quill than have to call someone. Hell if your business only accepts walk ins and calls I'm going to assume you're illegally operating and have something to hide. I'd trust a business that only responds to emails over one that only takes calls.

[-] octobob@lemmy.ml 8 points 4 days ago

What history are you talking about? All of 1920s to present day calls are common ways of communicating with people. I take calls frequently at work between coworkers.

I have never even heard of emailing to set up something like a haircut or car appointment. I've always called for something like that. Or I'll call to pickup food I assume that's what most people do?

You're legit paranoid if you think only taking calls is "hiding something".

Refusing to take calls for a preference reason is some childish shit. Just grow up and talk on the phone

[-] superniceperson@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Why the fuck would you call to set appointments or order food for pickup? What century are you living in that businesses don't have websites for that. Why are you so lazy that you're going to force a minimum wage worker to type things into a website that you yourself can access?

If it's not an app or website, it's a scam.

[-] octobob@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Lmao what?

For my car for instance, I like to talk to the person about things going on with it, I just got quotes for tires for instance.

I've literally never ordered food online, other than a few random restaurants that are online order only. They took down my email and made me make an account, fuck that for getting some dinner. I'm not subjecting anyone to anything, taking calls is their job. They just write down the order on a ticket and make food ???

Also there are quite a bit of restaurants in my area that do not have websites. Think like pizza shops, bars, a ton of non-english speaking places. Also not everyone can use a website or app. Older people in particular.

When I have people work on my home for something I can't do myself, they often prefer the calls and I do as well because I need to iron things out and get opinions and chat.

When it comes to work, I'll literally send an email and get a call back sometimes. It just works better for my field.

You're the one being weird about something people have been doing for the past century.

I prefer to call for food because it guarantees that the restaurant (which I presumably like) will get all of the money I spend on food.

Nearly all of those online ordering platforms take a cut from whatever they facilitate. Sometimes that means prices are more expensive online, or sometimes it's the same price on my receipt but less money for the restaurant.

And I'm not sure what your point about minimum wage workers is. Normally it's already someone's job to talk to customers and enter their order in a system.

[-] Bunnylux@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

This is a ludicrous take lmao

[-] ssfckdt 3 points 4 days ago

Has it occurred to you that some of us just *don't like dealing with people?"

A near-lifetime of BBSing and IRCing and what not I'm far more comfortable behind a keyboard than in a realtime conversation.

Introversion isn't just for millennials anymore

[-] Bunnylux@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Life doesn't exist to make you feel comfortable

[-] HertzDentalBar 5 points 4 days ago

Neither does your mom, but that explains why you are the way you are.

[-] Axiochus@lemmy.world 18 points 5 days ago

Fuck off, yellow. It's not that easy 😭

[-] i_dont_want_to 8 points 4 days ago

...am I in the minority where I don't mind making calls all that much? I prefer doing things online, but sometimes a 5 minute call is easier than dragged out asynchronous correspondence.

[-] ssfckdt 5 points 4 days ago

If you like being on hold for 2 hours

Although lately I've been burned multiple times by inaccurate online information saying a place was open when it wasn't, so I've started to call ahead instead.

[-] i_dont_want_to 5 points 4 days ago

Nah if I'm on hold for too long I just hang up unless I have no other alternative.

[-] Default_Defect@midwest.social 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I can read faster than you can talk, please just text me. I don't want to suffer through all of your ums and uhs.

[-] tfm@europe.pub 5 points 4 days ago

Calling is for friends and family only. Change my mind.

(and emergencies obviously)

[-] owsei@programming.dev 3 points 4 days ago

Why would that be the case, though?

[-] tfm@europe.pub 5 points 4 days ago

I don't want to get called by coworkers/customers/gov/companies (except they are friends or if it's an emergency) and waste my time while I have other shit to do. Or if I just don't want to talk to them. A text message does the job.

[-] owsei@programming.dev 3 points 4 days ago

Yeah that makes sense

Although for something where the time matters (like ordering food or warning someone) I still prefer calls

But that's just me

[-] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Saw a similar thread in BitchSky.

I'm nuanced, but it will be in my time, at my terms.

Leave a recording if it's low priority🔻.
