I think any sane world, someone would have stepped in a decade ago as an advocate, and gotten them the combination of mental health care and accountability explained to them in compassionate terms they could understand. There has never needed to be a fucking wiki dedicated to this person.

Early Sonichu is fascinating and compelling ad outsider art. Daniel Johnston famously had a breakdown and was protected from the world after getting famous. The world needs to react to weirdos with a little more kindness.

Y’all also have to remember that KiwiFarms started as a Chris-Chan harassment forum. Kiwifarms is so fucked up that cloudflare won’t even host them. There’s something about staring into the void long enough…

it's also important to note that the trolling that was brought upon chris chan ultimately worsened any prior mental health issues they had, by having flocks of ppl pretending to be fans, love interests and villains. Not only did it give Chris Chan a fake sense of importance (fake as in orchestrated) that ultimately made them more egotistical but also more paranoid, to the point they were passive-aggressive towards anyone who interacted with them (I'm using they/them to refer to classic chris and trans mtf chris simultaneously) and making them an overall aggressive person. They were absolutely wrong in many occasions (being homophobic, sexist, racist, ecc...) but it doesn't excuse the people who were active participants in their mental decline, enabling certain fantasies that ultimately made them psychotic then turn around and acting all moral like "chris you shouldn't do that" while they egged him on the whole time. They took advantage of a deeply mentally ill person who is also autistic for their own entertainment and then people act as if they didn't contribute to the person that Chris chan is today. If there was no trolling Chris could've been helped appropriately (excluding the Bob and Barb factor) and they could've been radically different, but all the trolling did was close them off to any kind of help or prospect for the future while slowly making them find comfort only in their own imagination.

I wont lie. I fucking hate myself and need this asshole to make me feel better.

If we don’t want to split the world into good and evil we should do this with every person or incident that we might learn from something.

Investigate and see why the person became and did what they did and became (…)

The online interest was purely “freak-show” type entertainment. No one had any interest in helping them.

I have much more compassion for Chris-Chan than for anyone who pointed and laughed. I agree with you, if someone was there to help, none of this would have happened.

I kind of remember she was offered therapy at one point and her parents stepped in and shut that down? Last I looked into her was when her father had died, and it seemed like that would be a good change. But now I've read an article about her arrest a few years ago, and I can't believe the judge didn't order an evaluation given what Chan reportedly said at her hearings.

Seems like people are still treating her like a freak :(

What happened to Chris-Chan is absolutely disgusting. And I don't know why anyone would want to criticize her now, given how much past bullying and harassment she received. Do you really want to be with the 4chan and KiwiFarms crowd?

[-] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

the trolls didnt make them rape their mom.

[-] KelvarIW 2 points 4 days ago

Neither of us have been the target of an online harassment campaign.

[-] Soulg@ani.social 1 points 6 days ago

There's a lot of very valid criticisms of them. But harassment is a different story.

[-] KelvarIW 2 points 4 days ago

Nothing she was accused of is worse than what our sitting elected federal politicians in the USA have done. Perhaps those actions are just her being a "person of the time."

Imagine a world where you can say any name you want and people know who the hell you’re talking about.

From context I’m guessing this is a streamer that a bunch of people have an unhealthy parasocial relationship with. I will never know, because I don’t typically look at replies.

So why bother posting such cynical shit?

For the other readers who may care, He was nothing like a streamer or internet personality as you assume. They were obsessed with sonic and shared their fanfiction comics online, were mocked ruthlessly and their mental health prevented them from dealing with it in a healthy way. They went full deep-end.

I say he but I think they transitioned and transitioned back? Can't remember.

[-] andros_rex@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Transitioned, prefers she nowadays but he is okay for past events.

The iffy iffy thing is that some of the manipulative stuff and breaks from reality make the “which pronoun” debate difficult. Chris Chan is not in her right mind. There’s evidence in the comics of a group of trolls called the “Idea Guys” that were pressuring her into doing and acting in ways that were making her uncomfortable. She claims to be an inter dimensional goddess ready to merge fictional realities (the smoking gun for the “Idea Guys” is the inclusion of like Hyperspace Neptune(?) and a couple of other series Chris Chan never had interest in.)

At some point some sort of court order or adult protective service is necessary. When someone starts calling themselves a “CPU Goddess” and “Jesus Christ Chan Sonichu Prime” it’s less “kick the autistic” and more “wow the internet bullied a kind of shitty guy into insanity.”

You're fascinating. Do you reply to every post you don't know or understand to declare you have nothing to add?

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

I don't know enough about opinions on the matter to do anything but upvote for a solid post.

Only thing I even know about it is the name and that fuckery was going on. It's not the kind of drama I tend to be entertained by specifically because the fuckery that would get discussed in passing that I'd scroll past was usually really really ugly fuckery, and that's bullshit, period.

So scanning the screen shots you provided is enough to make me glad I didn't ever pay attention to it. I'd have been furious

I'm so pleased to see this isn't actually an unpopular opinion.

I was a toxic little shit who loved reading Chris Chan drama, and I'm utterly ashamed. They were just a weird person who deserved the right to do weird things in relative privacy.

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
