They picked that riding for a reason. The Cons got 81.8% of the vote in the recent election in that riding.

I wish we had the requirement that you must LIVE in the riding you're running for and have lived there the past 2 years at least. Should also have to live there the entire time in office as well.

Hilarious that a bunch of Albertans that hate Ottawa politicians are about to vote in an Ottawa politician.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 28 points 3 days ago

Perfectly on brand, tbh.

They love freedom, but not for trans or gays.

They love their country, but they hate paying the taxes to support it.

They love democracy, but they hate when anybody else wins.

They hate tyranny, but they love to back traitors.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago

I'd love to see Albertans reject him as an "Ottawa elite parachute candidate".

They won't, of course, but a guy can dream...

Because they're not consistent. It's not about anyone being an Ottawa politician, it's just their tribalist victim complex.

[-] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 days ago

Exactly, your MP is supposed to represent your local interest. If they don't live there why the fuck would they care about you and your interests?

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 20 points 3 days ago

The last thing I would change is you only get paid the median wage of the people who you represent.

Truly a person of the people

It would encourage you to do a better job and try and lift your community to greater heights

[-] xthexder@l.sw0.com 12 points 3 days ago

That's actually a decent idea. Imagine if Trump's income was capped at $66k/year, the US median income. He might actually give a shit about income inequality and raising the minimum wage.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

Nah, he'd just ramp up the "side hustle" grifting even more.

[-] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 50 points 3 days ago

If I just voted for someone and then they quit to allow someone else to run and I needed to go vote AGAIN just for some power play I would be fucking pissed. Hopefully these voters are as well.

[-] villasv@lemmy.ca 67 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

All the people that thought Poilievre would not continue as the opposition leader need a wake up call. You still don't understand what you're fighting against. Cult of personality is a major pillar of fascism, and loyalty (to the leader, not to the country) is the most valuable trait. Poilievre had a few humiliating defeats but he's still gaining grounds for the CPC, and the conservative wave is still on it sway, bolder and with lots of resentments piled up.

Take this seriously. The enemy doesn't have to be smart or competent, they just need to amass power. https://www.antihate.ca/40ways

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

I didn't expect him to voluntarily step down.

I expect the party to follow it's own damn rules and have the leadership review that their party rules requires after a losing election.

Of course, they could still do that after he inevitably wins in one of the safest seats in the country.

[-] CircaV@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 days ago

What kind of calculus do you think the liberal party has done just now…. Let loser Polievre come back to show himself to be more of an obstructionist loser that he continues to be??? He’s going to block Carney’s agenda again just like they did during the last house sitting. Also Scheer is an absolute thumb head. Polievre is a coward and a hypocrite.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

What kind of calculus do you think the liberal party has done just now

Carney's response to the byelection question was basicailly "He can have his byelection if he wants. I'm too busy with more important things to waste time with silly partisan games"

Which makes sense. No need to hand the conservatives a "see the liberals are blocking democracy' talking point.

[-] CircaV@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

Except everyone knows the cons will obstruct everything and blockade the work of parliament and committee work - that is who they are. I am really curious to see how the liberals under Carney combat that sort of filibustering that cons did for the past few years.

Oh wow, that link is a great resource! I had no idea it existed. Gonna share that around my circles for sure.

Why did a lid suddenly appear on this bin in the second frame?

[-] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 8 points 3 days ago

Most likely AI.

[-] HowAbt2day@futurology.today 5 points 3 days ago

They don’t use lids in Ontario.

[-] Jhex@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

poilievre is now a DEI hire exactly in the way the cons lie and misrepresent DEI hires

[-] shittydwarf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 70 points 4 days ago

Sweet another chance to take that one from him too

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 47 points 4 days ago

Voters rejected PP.

It seems like this other Conservative isn't confident in their own ability to act as an MP. And it doesn't look good to give your seat up to a loser.

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 51 points 4 days ago

It also shows to the people in the riding that they don't matter ... the position is just to get a politician into power not to represent actual people.

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 13 points 4 days ago

the position is just to get a politician into power not to represent actual people.

Based when we're talking about the Conservative party, eh? 🤭

[-] thijsje@social.vivaldi.net 11 points 4 days ago

@Showroom7561 @ininewcrow Based regardless of the political party.

You know I find the nominal political viewpoints of conservatives(small c) just. Not exactly my cup of tea but like supporting armed gay married couples with a marihuana growing business while having a long term view towards a responasible budget is an entirely valid and respectable #policy position to have.

The brain melting Hybrid civil war they are waging on the other hand...

Not just in #Canada but across #Europe and the entire #West. Well what passes for The West now a days anyway.

[-] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 days ago

There is no such thing as a small "c" Conservative. If you vote for the party, you stand with the tent.

[-] villasv@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

You know I find the nominal political viewpoints of conservatives(small c) just.

Why even bother creating a steel man for conservatism? Free yourself from this enlightened centrist fantasy.

Yeah, things like "responsible budget" are always just a lie.

It's not worth acknowledging the "good points" when they only seem to use them as a smoke screen and a distraction.

If you want to embrace the ideals that they willfully abandon at every opportunity, maybe just find a new name for that set of ideals.

They would care if they could read. The people of the riding that is.

[-] Freshparsnip@lemm.ee 25 points 3 days ago
[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

I mean the other guy won by like 80%. I doubt he's going to lose

[-] nik282000@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

They wanted the other guy. Voting 80% in favour for a guy only to have him tossed out by some rich prick might change some minds.

[-] dermanus@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Maybe. But I bet they elect him. It's the safest seat in the country.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Conservative minds?

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

A chance to take another seat from them. Heck, if he loses there, too, he might even try again!

So the unemployed loser went to daddy for a handout. I want to know how much he paid the other guy for switching places.

[-] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 18 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Something something safe space, something something inclusion, something something participation trophy.

On Friday, the Conservative Party announced Conservative MP-elect Damien Kurek will resign to allow Poilievre to run in an upcoming byelection.

Kurek was first elected in the Alberta riding of Battle River—Crowfoot in 2019.

The Conservatives handily won that riding on Monday with nearly 82 per cent of the vote.

Of course it's Alberta and solidly blue.

Dude hasn't had a real job, so having things handed to him like this is prob second nature for him.

[-] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 14 points 4 days ago

Where's the Rhinoceros Party when you need them? There's no chance in hell that riding flips for the Liberals, and likely not for the NDP, but an independent running on a platform of "hear me out, this will be hilarious" just might stand a chance.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago
[-] HappySkullsplitter@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

That's going to be entertaining to see a liberal win that seat well

See a lot of post just about the 81.8%(53,502) of votes, but the bigger thing is that it's out of 81,123 electors so even if every other elector went to a single candidate plus another 10k swung from Conservative's that would still not be enough.

Okay Battle River-Crowfoot, you know what to do

[-] bowreality@lemmy.ca 15 points 4 days ago

It’s exceptionally blue even for Alberta but who knows? I hope the liberal candidate calls Fanjoy for tips and starts TODAY. It’s not impossible.

[-] Corngood@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

You can sell it as their chance to be represented in the government. Beyond the practical benefits, people like to be on the winning team.

It's never going to make up the difference here, but it would be funny just to see him to worse than the other guy.
