We only just narrowly escaped having a conservative government this election.

What’s really concerning is that the conservatives got a pretty big boost in the number of seats compared to the last election so there’s a significant amount of people that don’t mind having MapleMAGA running the country.

8 million people still voted for the Fuck-You-I've-Got-Mine party.

It is not like we don't also have a portion of our population that pines to be ruled by a dictator - Look who is leading Alberta.

We shouldn't have let her back in the country after her visit with Trumplestiltskin

[-] CircaV@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Dude. Head maple Maga leader of the Conservative Party not only failed to win after being massively ahead in the polls for 2.5 years capitalizing on Trudeau fatigue, he lost his seat!!! He is done, toast, finito. 1) Either his own party will elect a new leader OR 2) PP will have to wait months and months until Prime Minister Carney calls a by-election. During which time, see my point 1 above. And if he runs again in same Alberta riding, I hope Blake Desjarlais runs against him

I think they'll have the next election (the 2026 mid-term) but I'm less sure about the election after that...

[-] CleoTheWizard@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Most likely the election for midterms will be rigged or rejected if it doesn’t go their way. Or it will be otherwise delayed. It doesn’t really matter, if they start to lose power faster they actually become more dangerous.

Americans elected Trump twice. We never learn our lessons.

[-] Gowron_Howard@lemm.ee 31 points 2 days ago

And they’ll be complacent when they elect him a third time.

Relying on elections to oust fascists isn't exactly a great plan.

If you cant even convince enough people to fill out a ballot, you wouldn't be able to convince enough people risk their lives in a revolt.

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah, the US is just kind of a writeoff at this point. Or at least the US Bernie Sanders is talking about.

[-] yournamehere@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

there will be elections? pffff. i mean even if you did the shit show of a race again, i doubt it, you can chose between pelosi/schumer-scam or king adolf.

It's going to be another spectacle of wealthy celebrities getting paid to entice simple minds.

I hope they use Beyonce and Snoop Dogg again!

I'm rooting for oligarchs housewives.

I hope Canada doesn't forget why Carney won next election cycle

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 day ago

That's almost entirely dependent on what happens in the world. Trump mostly shutting up for a just month was enough for the polls to tighten.

[-] WhatSay@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

It would be a good time for independent candidates to rise up to give people a better option than the two parties that have held power for too long.

[-] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I doubt we'll ever see better conditions for a 3rd party victory than the 2016 election, and even then they did terribly.

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing the groundwork laid for it, mostly in the form of ranked choice voting becoming more popular.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Ireland is a great place to model after as they have plenty of successful independents.

Next time they'll vote for the Hitler adjacent part instead of the Nazi party!
