When rich people stop trying to pretend that poverty is cool and that they are relatable.

[-] BackYardIncendiary@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 4 days ago

Also, when poor people stop being cooler than rich people :D

Its a weird oroboros.

Poor people wear ripped jeans because fashion has made jeans expensive.

Rich people like the urban look of ripped jeans because their jeans aren't ripped and they want to look relatable.

Fashion companies make ripped jeans for rich people to mimic poor people wearing ripped jeans because they have to.

Everybody has ripped jeans unless you are lame and can afford to not have ripped jeans.

So there is like an income bell curve of ripped jeans.

This is why I have my jeans starched and pressed. You don't know where I'm coming from. Outlying data point FTW

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 9 points 4 days ago

Both good points. I like the feel of not worn out pants from time to time.

When who ever is wearing them doesn't look cool. And a lot of looking cool is giving zero fucks about other people's opinion of ripped jeans.

Oh really good question! You are so extremely right!

Personally, I'm of the opinion that they aren't fashionable if they are ripped to be fashionable.

Ripped jeans are supposed to be the pants that you wore until they started to come apart, and you're supposed to be wearing them because they are comfortable, not for looks.

I used to skateboard every day every free time i had. I hardly had any pants that weren't ripped. It was kind of weird when it suddenly became vool and people bought pre-ripped pants. On the plos sude i never felt so fashionable

They never were. Fashion in general is just dumb.

I never understood why deliberately weathering hats and clothes as well as making them faded or rip was 'fashionable'. I think it is just a mockery on those that can't afford overpriced clothing, so it's like "here! we're pandering to your demographic! it is cheap now!". Then again even when "new" ripped jeans are being sold, it's marked up too.

[-] BussyCat@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

They can be fashionable and fashion can be dumb but ripped jeans are currently considered fashionable

[-] Nyticus@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 3 days ago

So you defend what is otherwise marketable trash? Wow, so cool...

How about you go and make rips and tears in every single pair of pants you have and see how you feel afterwards.

[-] BussyCat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Hitler was in charge of Germany in 1939, I stated a fact you wouldn’t accuse me of supporting nazis by stating a fact would you? So why are you saying I am defending the fashion industry for simply stating what a trend is?

[-] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

You don't have to be a genius to see trends and what is fashionable. Stating facts that ripped jeans are in style doesn't mean someone is defending it, just making observations. I am not fashionable, and I don't care about trends, but it's naive to ignore facts.

Lots of people still like old pants from goodwill. I saw a girl wearing pants that just had like two threads holding them together.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

The 90s is back and has brought them back, but like extra. I saw someone walking around where literally their entire leg from thigh to calf was exposed. Looked really uncomfortable tbh.

[-] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

Are they not more cool the more their discomfort increases?

[-] wheelie@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Depends on where the rip is

[-] quediuspayu@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

Last time it was after about 4 or 5 years.

[-] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago

24/25 I guess. Probably whenever you're too old to go to Coachella

I am not sure about fashion, but I have found that repairing clothing is pretty cheap. Even if you pay a tailor to do so. Maybe patches can be fashionable but I just don't want my toe to catch that little knee hole and create a problem.

When Spongebob wouldn't stop talking about ripping his pants.

Clothing stops being fashionable when they are ripped or damaged. Full stop.

[-] watson387@sopuli.xyz 4 points 4 days ago

Fashion is all in your mind

Nah they're back

[-] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Depends on the wearer’s age.
