To be fair, in the context of the movie Storm is being an asshole here. Rogue's powers are a curse that has left her touch starved and that has ravaged her mental health. Meanwhile, Storm's power is to literally control the fucking weather with zero downside whatsoever. Shut the fuck up, Storm.

Rogue in the films isn't done justice. Idk comics, but in X-Men Evolution the animated series she

spoilerbasically beats Apocalypse 1v1.

In the older animated series she has flight and superstrength as part of her default power sets. I recall her getting those powers from Captain/Ms Marvel.

[-] Schal330@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago

You're right, she was portrayed as pretty weak in the movies. I feel like she almost took the role of Jubilee when comparing with the original cartoon. But also she did have her moments of weakness in the original cartoon.

Rogue collapsed on the floor in front of apocalypse

I know that this is also a joke about cake but in the OG cartoon, the two heavy hitters that almost regularly swoop in and bail out even the likes of Cyclops and Wolverine are definitely Rogue and Storm. But the power levels are strange and inconsistent. One moment they're god tier and the next they'll fly straight into the giant bad guy's slow motion punch and get KO'ed for the next 10 minutes.

Jubilee got that omega glow up when they switched her to dazzler, but yeah OG jubilee was meh, power wise

[-] Senal@programming.dev 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Im honestly not 100% on this but isn't her core power set the draining ability.

Iirc the flight, durability and super strength come from another lady who she nearly killed by accident, ended up with them permanently and that added to her general "can't touch, people die" trauma

Edit : nvm just saw the captain marvel reference, not sure how I missed that the first time

Doesn't Storm have an ancient demon/god gunning to take over her body?

She also has a very American accent in this scene

I think Storm is being flippant but I don't think she is an asshole or should shut the fuck up.

Storm has absolutely faced discrimination as a result of her powers. She is still a mutant. She is still hunted by the government who want to lock her away in a cage.

Now, I don't in any way want to discount the pain that Rogue has had to endure. She faces the same problems Storm faces, PLUS the curse of her power causing her to be touch starved and the inadvertent pain she has caused others.

It's understandable why offering such a cure would be appealing for Rogue. But let's not forget Rogue has slowly gained more control over her powers. She can have physical contact with people, she even gets to enjoy their powers for a brief time.

Forcing the "cure" on people is the problem. Forcing them through fear or forcing them as a means of control. That's the problem. It's totally fine if Rogue decides to take the cure and is of sound body and mind.

Just because a sizable population sees Rogue as a "freak" doesn't mean that she is one. Storm is reminding her that there is nothing wrong with her. She doesn't have to make this choice. She's reminding Rogue that she has friends, she has a (found) family, she has support.

Should Storm perhaps be a little more tactful in how she approaches it? Sure. But she is absolutely right to say it.

rogue literally kills people she touches, it remains baffling that people go "oh but she learned to control her powers", would you like to try living with the knowledge that if you lose control while petting your cat it fucking dies?

i've literally had nightmares about crushing a hamster while trying to hold it in my hands, if xmen was real it would be an astounding feat of mental fortitude for rogue to have not offed herself out of sheer existential dread.

[-] discostjohn@programming.dev 1 points 6 days ago

But she doesn't kill the people she touches, usually

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 6 days ago

my brother in christ of nazareth, listen to yourself

"she only kills them sometimes!"

[-] discostjohn@programming.dev 3 points 5 days ago

That's not what I meant, and it isn't entirely accurate anyway. Her power absorbs the energy of the people she touches, it doesn't just kill them.

I don't believe Rogue has ever killed anyone with her touch by accident. The most obvious counterpoint would be Carol Danvers, but that situation had as much to do with Ms. Marvel's powers as it did Rogue's. Maybe you're confusing her with another character that has an instant death poke, but in most universes, Rogue's powers aren't inherently more dangerous than the average mutant's, providing she accepts them as part of herself.

She was traumatized by nearly killing someone when her X-Gene first activated, and she refused to gain any sort of mastery over her powers for a long time because of that. Just like other mutants, Rogue's abilities are core to her identity, and a huge part of her journey was acknowledging that fact and learning to control them. If she had followed your sentiments, she probably wouldn't have made that journey.

[-] Earflap@reddthat.com 45 points 6 days ago

That's easy to say when you're a conventionally attractive person whose powers have no downsides.

I'm pretty sure the guy that melts everything and everyone he touches has a different opinion on the matter.

[-] the_q@lemm.ee 7 points 5 days ago

Yeah the "I know everything about amateur radio" autistic folks don't want a cure for theirs, but screw the non verbals, constant meltdowns and barely functional ones. Life is a breeze for them.

[-] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 12 points 5 days ago

I do not need a cure.

All of you neurotypicals need a cure from thinking so stereotypically like some sie character with Bad writing who was only made to pay the runtime of the game

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Autistic people have the evil sickness of being honest and truthful

Typically Autistic people aren't manipulative and have strong ethics. We may not understand all the neurotypical behaviors but at least we don't go around rejecting others.

Also a not of the modern world was likely developed by Autistic people. Thinking differently is good.

[-] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 15 points 6 days ago

Brain Worm Bobby speaks of a cure in the context of his belief that Autism is a disease.

Sane people talk of a cure in the context of treatment.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

no, not really
sane people don't talk about a cure at all, they talk about unfucking society so people don't need a "cure" to live lives just as rich and dignified as everyone else.

Autism isn't the disease, capitalism is.

[-] the_q@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

Yeah a better society would help a lot of mental health and developmental issues.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 4 points 6 days ago

With the goauld controlling his brain of course

[-] Tuxman@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 days ago

But… if you can fundamentally change how someone thinks and reason to be in line with what is "normal", what is left of the original person?

[-] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago

Is it well understood what the physiological basis for austism even is?

[-] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 5 days ago

Lol no, not even remotely. There are theories, like with ADHD, but since it's a very complex neurological phenomenon it's far from well understood. If so we could think about how to make neurotypicals finally be a little bit more aware of details!

(The last sentence obviously is a joke, please don't crucify me)
