I'm sorry. Weren't the winter Olympics just in China? Yeah, the same China with an active genocide? And the world cup is still run by... Checks notes... FIFA. So, umm, yeah...
Yeah, but now there is a chance that you go to watch world cup football, and you get to watch prison basketball in El Salvador.
And also Berlin 1936, and Moscow 1980.
IOC is as corrupt as FIFA from everything I know about them
1936 Olympics were held in Berlin, when the Nazi party held power. I hope this gains traction, but the IOC are not the most moral characters out there.
That would be a gross understatement lol
I say let them have it, but boycott visitors to the U.S. to watch.
Let the billions they spent on arenas and entertainment sit empty and everyone can watch it on TV instead.
I wouldn’t travel there anyway. I’d feel so unsafe in that country as of now.
Fuck the USA and their fascist pig regime! 🖕
This 100%.
Not that I disagree, but if the Olympic Committee didn't have an issue with Sochi hosting the 2014 winter games then I don't see a scenario where the USA bid is withdrawn.
Don't most of the areas that end up hosting the Olympics end up spending more money than they bring in? I say do it. There needs to be real economic loss before the American people learn their lesson. I also say that as an American.
And tell people not to go. Especially, warn international friends that it's not safe here.
Boycotting works, and a message needs to be sent that the US is not okay.
Don't most of the areas that end up hosting the Olympics end up spending more money than they bring in?
Los Angeles generated a profit last time they hosted the Olympics. They don't spend like crazy on sports arenas or dorms because they already have them.
That's so cute. They think FIFA and the IOC care about anything other than money.
Even if they withdrew from the US, they'd only be doing it so they could extort money from the new hosts.
They are just giant money vacuums, taking a nations tax funds and redistributing it to international billionaires.
Even nazi Germany was allowed to host the Olympics. I don't think it's good, but that's the way it works.
i think world news is, as the name suggests, the wrong community to call for signing a petition
Host them in Canada or Mexico for extra kicks.
Too late. Who would take it at such short notice? Would that country be any better for the listed reasons for the change?
They won't. But I wish they would, as far as I've seen from my local LA government, they're also really poorly prepared. The plan, for instance, is to hold events across several major LA venues (and not build any new ones) but since our public transit is complete trash, it's going to be a logistics nightmare.
Basically us locals are going to straght up have to go full quarantine mode since the traffic is going to be so bad. And it's a shame, last time I heard at LAEDCs forecast, they really need the revenue.
Yep. I am not sure why we are hosting when we know it ends up costing a city more than it generates and we have budget shortfalls already.
To be frank, I would like to see us just say "sorry, you know what? now isn't a great time for us after all."
Feels like it would be best for everyone.
Last time LA had the Olympics it generated a profit. Even if it loses money LA has extracted a lot of federal money under Biden for the betterment of the city.
"I know that this is all part of our genius leader's plan."

If they happen in the Untied States, I predict extraordinarily low attendance

Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
