My friend is back from holiday! We're going to train together which is a blast and she really pushes me.

I'm also reading Scarred about the NXIVM cult which I've found really interesting.

My diet is going well! My work trousers now just about fit me, so I reckon another 6 to 8 weeks dieting and they'll fit me properly again

I made cookies for my partner the other day!

Aaand ... survived a car accident with minor injuries?

The weather is really nice right now, too!

[-] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 week ago

Oh blimey are you ok? Car collisions aren't nice

[-] dandelion 1 points 1 week ago

oh, yeah - I'm OK, I have a mild brain injury (and this isn't my first), but I'm OK. The car isn't though, it is totaled.

Frigging Nora Dandelion I'm really sorry that happened. So glad you got through it!

Frigging Nora

that's a new one for me, I love it!! I'm in the States, so admittedly my Commonwealth slang is pretty limited.

And no worries - it's a stressor at a bad time, but for the most part the experience made me feel pretty lucky and forced me to take a couple days off from work, not the worst thing. I even managed to squeeze a few errands in that were looming over my head, so I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Thanks for your kindness though, I really appreciate it - you really are so nice, not just to me but this whole community 🥰 💕

Been shopping with my mom! 😃 She had laryingitis recently and it made her feel better! I ended up buying and eating a tub of ice cream because I've had this weird craving for vanilla icecream for days haha, I also bought lots of goodies too!

Still drawing this since I'm officially the slowest artist ever and I have absolutely no shame LMAO

I like how this is coming out now!

Saw a goldcrest yesterday. I know they're small, yet I couldn't help but be amazed at how teeny tiny this guy was.

The kitten had been super snuggly so that's been nice. We also purchased a planter for some herbs abs I'll do that once frost is over. I got to room 46 in Blue Prince which was a surprise. My teeth haven't hurt today so that's also nice.

Oh, just today? Cat is snuggly, plants going well, teeth no hurt. Blue Prince win was like two days ago.

[-] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 1 points 1 week ago

Sounds good! Kitty snuggles are always good

Nice one well done!

I watched Oni: thunder gods tale. It’s really good, and only 4 episodes of roughly 35 min, so basically a long movie.

I also got some of my cleaning done, which isn’t really an accomplishment considering the state of things but I did it and felt like I got something done so I’m counting it as a good thing.

And I have more quail eggs arriving today, hopefully they hatch better than the last batch I got, cuz these are “fancier” (by just a bit) and thus were significantly pricier.

[-] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 week ago

I've never had quails eggs! What are they like?

[-] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They taste like eggs, maybe slightly creamier yolk. But otherwise indistinguishable. They seem to cook a lot faster. They are little nutrient bombs though, super full of healthy.

Kind of tedious to open, as you need special scissors (thin shell, thick membrane, makes for an egg that smooshes if you try to crack it like a chicken egg), and 1 chicken egg is like 2.5-3 quail eggs in volume, but worth it overall, as you can comfortably keep 4-5 hens in a 50 gallon aquarium, and they start laying at 6 weeks from hatch which is wicked fast compared to chickens (18 weeks).

[-] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 week ago

Sounds like a really nice thing to eat, I'll have to keep an eye out for them

[-] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 week ago

Heck yeah! Once they hatch they are even stupid easy to raise, they take care of themselves mostly (in case you may consider that option in the future after you try them)

With eggs being so expensive around here, a lot of people who never would have tried something new are in the “sure I’d try it, it’s eggs that taste like eggs right?” Camp. Which is fucking amazing because people who never left their home town aren’t people who try new things readily.

But you fuck with eggs, man.

I've heard raising quail can be a good way to get around codes enforcement in cities that don't allow keeping chickens, because the birds are so small and quiet it's not always obvious to neighbors.

[-] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yes and no.

My city has a separate license for game birds (like quail) vs chickens. But my city also allows chickens if you get 1/10 permits (I got one so I can start my flock, because I have a unique town property that isn’t flanked by residential, and thus barely qualified for it, with permission from my one neighbor)

Quail are mostly quiet tho so if you keep them inside, nobody will know other than a male screaming now and then, but it’s not a noise people would recognize (it sounds like he’s drowning, honestly, it’s loud enough I can hear it from upstairs, and it scares the shit out of my cats, but it doesn’t sound like a bird crowing in the same way a rooster does.)

Mostly they sound like frogs. I’m not at all joking. There’s a super solid chance all the native frog ribbit sounds I heard growing up along a waterfront were quail and not bullfrogs. Largely the same sound.

So yeah you could easily keep a small\medium covey with nobody knowing. Probably a few dozen birds easily if you wanted. I’m sort of doing that now because I don’t want my entire house to be inspected by the city and I don’t want to keep them outside (infections happen in nature), meaning they aren’t a game bird, but a pet. But a license for them would be $5 since I’m already approved for chickens, so it’s sort of meh for my situation, I just choose to skirt the law. And literally none of the people who want to buy my eggs are going to say shit about it, because eggs are -so expensive-

They need about 3sqft each bird to be happy and comfortable, multiple floors made of boxes or wire mesh are fine if the route is big enough for them (I use bricks, they work well)

They lay eggs wherever they feel, I give them a nesting box but they don’t usually lay in it. Basically it’s just a big poo for them, they aren’t really broody or anything, and they don’t mind you taking their eggs. Most they do if you handle them is try to scratch you with their big dumb chicken feet.
