As someone that was ruined by GG for a while I don't think a lot of people realize how influential it is.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

Ruined by being part of it, or being targetted by it?

[-] scintilla@lemm.ee 11 points 3 days ago

I was part of it in the sense that I thought what they were saying was true but never participated in anything because I was a child and not on social media at all.

Shitty_rambly_gg_story

I was 13ish when my dad started talking about politics with me and I listened to him because he was the "cool parent". When GG started he would share videos with me and the alt right pipeline took hold from there. I was in deep enough I watched sargon religiously for reference.

I realized that I was trans for the first time around here. The self hatred lead me into isolating myself further and pushing that deep down to the point I only remembered that after I rediscovered a journal my parents tried to have me use for stress. I was homeschooled and basically completely isolated so it got worse from there. I would have called myself an MRA for a while. I lurked in a lot of the places they gathered and absorbed basically everything as fact. I only really started working to "deprogram" myself after I realized I was trans again and started watching Blair white. The YouTube algorithm did probably the only good thing that it had done that whole time and recommended Contrna Points. From there I started actually looking into the things that were being said and not just taking what they were saying as fact and they were almost entirely bullshit. from there I started looking at different political ideologies and was figuring out who I was. I have to actively work against a lot of the thinking that was so deeply ingrained in me. I know there's really no excuse for it but I do try to be a better person than I was at that point.

Contrna Points

I found her video on Men interesting. Not the contents of the video as such (though her production was as always top notch) but the reaction to it. It seemed like a big chunk of her fan base was mad at her for touching the topic at all and another big chunk acted like she was saying a bunch of uniquely revelatory things and were pointing to stuff she said that Alison Tieman had arrived at something like a decade before.

There is a weirdly large amount of people that only get their political information from youtube.

[-] CptInsane0@lemmy.world 45 points 5 days ago

Needs to start at Lowtax banning hentai from Something Awful.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 5 days ago

I don't know the connection to that. First incident I know of Gamergate was the Zoë Quinn pile-on.

[-] Arkthos@pawb.social 46 points 5 days ago

Hentai getting banned on SA is what caused Moot to found 4chan.

[-] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 14 points 4 days ago

This is impossible to 100% confirm or deny with solid evidence at this point but uh...

Good chance it wasn't just hentai.

It was loli. Drawn CSAM.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 5 days ago

Fair enough.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 13 points 4 days ago

Of course this all happened because of sexual repression in society. It makes so much sense.

[-] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 12 points 4 days ago

Understanding politics as derivative from a psychosexual origin point is a shockingly useful lense to use.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 days ago

lmao of course that's what spawned it

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Crazy how it's all connected...

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 19 points 5 days ago

The world is far smaller and far dumber than any of us ever thought back when we were young

well at least it's dumb in a predictable way once you understand the rules :)

[-] kibiz0r@midwest.social 28 points 4 days ago

If anyone’s interested in a comprehensive overview of Gamergate, Ian Danskin has a fantastic video: A Case Study in Digital Radicalism

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 24 points 4 days ago

Gamergate ruined so many things.

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 29 points 5 days ago

It's a thinker, but god damn, that's a good meme

[-] inlandempire@jlai.lu 23 points 5 days ago

Wait Im out of the loop, what are the in-between correlations?

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 99 points 5 days ago

steve bannon weaponized gamergate to normalize his far right ideology. that far right movement elected 45/47. 47's tariffs ar, making the nintendo switch prohibitively expensive for the same crowd that was his original driving force

Gamergate was a 2014 campaign to "get politics [women and minorities] out of video games" and is thought to have helped create the ongoing "culture war" in the US as far right leaders learned to use the same rhetoric.

Ngl, I'm kinda feeling vindicated reading this post. I'd been saying for years to my friend (who doubted me on this) that gamergate started this whole division politics. Making the zeitgeist pendulum swing from one polarity to the other. It led to me-too/cancel culture, which then swung the pendulum towards trump 1.0 fake news and anti vax, then swung to BLM and Lgbqt movements then it finally swung to trump 2.0's vengeance we're seeing today.

All this bullshit started from game journalists. Jfc, I miss the uncomplicated days before 2014, when we could all just enjoy TF2 and collect hats without a care in the world of what anyone thought of anything. Hard to imagine our favorite innocent hobby got distorted to lay the groundwork for the divided mess we're in. And its only going to get cataclysmically worse.

I want to go back...

[-] kyotain@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago

It wasn't started by game journalists, it was started by the same deplorables who helped elect 45/47. Gamergate was just a successful trial run of that battlefront tactic. It's all astoturf, smoke, and mirrors but it's still the same class war.

[-] kattfisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

If you actually look into it, the original accusation was completely made up.

Even if it had been true it would have been a storm in a teacup. An incredibly tiny indie developer had their lover write a positive article about their incredibly niche indy game. Who gives a shit?

Gamergate was a psyop to politicize young white males by making them believe their hobby was under attack by feminists. It was largely created by Steve Bannon through Breitbart News and its editor Milo Yiannopoulos.

The ongoing "culture war" is not an accident or an emergent fenomenon. Powerful figures have worked long and hard to bring about fascism.

Oh I dont doubt it. Fwiw, (and I'm going go off topic from the architrects behind it, and speak as someone who creates art and reveres it) I remember when it happened that I thought it was unneccessary and overblown drama that in fact annoyed actual gamers. Like, our pass time/hobby/inspiration/artform was used as a vehicle for some politicizing down our collective throats. A square peg for a round hole. (I.e. Idgaf.) Its what turned me off from the whole social justice movements targeting entertainment since. Like I appreciate the intent, but ultimately it was just a bunch of virtue signaling lazy bones riding on coat tails of what would have once been protected as Art. One can do right by others in many ways, but to throw tantrums at Art for being 'woke' or not woke enough, I just hate it. I'm a poc and have endured, yet to me, eviscersting creativity to virtue signal is a cowardly low effort tactic. Make something (its hard!) or shut the fuck up and appreciate those that create magic, whether its games or film, whatever it may be.

Gamergate, Bannon's strategy for drawing out young voters, Trump, tariffs.

[-] petrol_sniff_king 11 points 5 days ago

Ohh, I get it now.
Wait, this is a good meme.

[-] rocket_dragon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 4 days ago

Sent this to my sister, she immediately "lmfaooo DAMN YOU GAMERGATE"

[-] programmer_belch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 4 days ago

I will wait for the emulator and then I will acquire my legally purchased games, no one will make me pay $80 for a game

[-] alehel@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

You reminded me of Yuzu and Riyujinx. Hadn't thought about them in a long time. Are there any in development emulators anymore?

[-] prole 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

LOL this one got me. I don't often save memes, but this one is quality so it deserves a spot in the folder.
