As someone who was denied treatment for my ADHD because I am able to hold a job (diagnosed late in life) I'm curious: why on earth would doctors deny treatment the other way around too? That sounds so illogical.

If I'm intruding too much - just dont reply, I understand.

I was denied treatment for ADHD too, because I have a bachelor's! Old psych said even a high school diploma is impossible for ADHD folks. Glad I was able to switch to a new psych who diagnosed me at 27.

Ok so I have autoimmune hyperthyroidism. This, among other things, gives me low blood pressure and a high heart rate. By 'refusing to treat me' I mostly mean that doctors have immediately jumped to the conclusion that my ADHD meds are the one and only cause, refusing further tests. Saying I need to go off the meds and if the symptoms persist I should come back. Even though I know and told them that I've had these symptoms for years, and have only been on these meds for half a year. This shows up in my file. I've also had a GP refuse to renew my prescription because he, too, thought I couldnt possibly have adhd since I'm educated and employed. I've also repeatedly felt like doctors think I'm just drug seeking instead of in actual need of these meds. Like, for example, being told that it's irresponsible that I take them by a different GP.

Thanks for typing it out! Doctors jumping to conclusions that are demonstratebly false by facts happened far too often to me too. Adapting by choosing a different one seems often the only solution.

Doctor's who don't suck at treating anything that requires controlled substances are few and far between. Many are ignorant about the actual laws governing scheduled substances so they just try to minimize prescribing any even if it means worse care for the patient.

Methamphetamines used to be legal, and they were advertised that way: take this pill, get more energy, and stay alert and focused at work. If I had to guess, I'd say they became illegal once people started overdosing. I'm not defending it, but I think it's interesting that you used to be able to buy it over the counter and now you can't anymore. Same thing with cocaine, actually, and I'm sure that's the same problem. People get addicted, use too much, and die.

Common problem with a lot of meds, including antidepressants and antipsychotics. I knew someone who didn't want to take their meds because it made them fat, and that was to counteract delusions and paranoia from schizophrenia. It's been decades, so I think the meds are better but the point is, yeah, lots of people have to pick and even if the side effects are less bad, you're actively having to choose to cause that to yourself.

Totally. And for me, I'm able to (at least appear to) be an upstanding, productive member of society without ADHD meds, so I can get away with not taking them.

For people with ADHD, some ADHD medication has a calming & focusing effect, that same medication has an energizing and euphoric for some (not all) neurotypical people, while also increasing their focus at the same time.

You and I have a huge deficit of Dopamine, so when we take them, it gets us to an average level of it. When an NT takes them, they end up with a surplus of Dopamine, which is really euphoria-inducing.

It's a prescription drug like any other, if u take it while diagnosed it'll js make you normal, but if you take it recreationally it'll act like a drug with all the side-effects.

If you take morphine for example, when in a fuckton of pain, it'll get rid of your pain, but if you take it recreationally it'll work like any other recreational drug does. It's obviously very simplified ik, and I could've worded it better but it gets my point across.

Everyone's bodies handle drugs differently. Strattera pushed my heart rate way up and giving it time didn't stop it. Multiple stimulants didn't do that to me.

If the government doesn't want the non-disabled to enjoy taking that for fun, how does that contribute to the problem? It could have made sense if it said "even though" instead of "and", but the way it is, it's just confusing.

Non disabled people enjoying the drug, isn’t what makes the drug hard to get. The drug is hard to get because the government tries to keep it away from people.

Drugs are much cheaper to produce then they are sold as.

Just produce enough for everyone that wants them but restrict it to having to pass drug safety education and a consent check if not doctor prescribed. Have thoughtful regulations and awareness about the whole thing.

That some people will misuse something is no excuses to keep it from those that medically require it. And compared to the curent climate. Any drug naive “adult” can buy a liquor bottle of death almost everywhere with next to zero guardrails in place.

My understanding though (US) is the DEA limits the raw ingredient supply with no regard to the demand by patients. The drug manufacturers get what they get whenever the DEA decides they are allowed to have it.

It sucks having the government decide whether I get my medication each month. It sucks having to submit to drug tests to prove I am taking my meds and not hoarding/selling them. I have a giant stack of paperwork from formal testing I had, which I had to pay for out of pocket because insurance doesn't cover it. It was something like 600-800 dollars. That is enough dammit. I shouldn't have to live in fear that my medication will be taken away or refilled late because I can't even request my refill until the last minute.

Generic methylphenidate is less than 20€ a month in France counting pharmacist's commission for handing over the box and the manufacturer's profit. Americans are getting scammed. (Oh and most French people would pay at most 2€ for this since the national insurance scheme covers it)

So, my doctor starts me out on the non-stimulant medications, even though they're known to be less effective, because the stimulants are so tightly controlled. It's ass-backwards. I feel like crap and my symptoms are marginally better.
