Just a simple and (in my opinion) sleek phone stand. Link for anyone interested: printables.com/model/1251408-simple-static-phone-stand

That looks really nice and elegantly simple. If I could make a suggestion though, you might want to raise the phone cradle up a bit and put a slot in the bottom so it can charge while on the stand.

I honestly never thought of that, maybe in a future model at some point. I rarely ever charge my phone on the stand, and only when it's horizontal. But I am glad for the feedback!

I only thought of it because I bought a little stand for my phone a couple years ago and it has one, but fair enough!

Any constructive criticism is welcome and all my models allow remixes, so feel free to modify if you are so inclined.

Couple days late, but I just remembered this post and dug it back up to make a suggestion if you (or anyone else) decide to remix it with the charging slot, to help retain the model's excellent printability.

Cutting a squared notch will create a steep overhang that will be difficult to print. But, if you instead cut a large circular hole through the bottom center, it will create a shallow taper that will be easier to accomplish, it will also cut down on filament usage 😃

If you posted this on Thingiverse, someone in the comments would complain about the supports being too hard to remove and the model being oriented the wrong way.

[-] kek_w_lol@lemmy.one 7 points 2 weeks ago

Luckily, I have learned to pre-orient my models correctly, to avoid such fiascos.

[-] Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Just make them Pan, then the orientation doesn't matter

Glad you like it and happy printing!

I love the design, simple, functional, and beautifully minimalistic!

[-] kek_w_lol@lemmy.one 4 points 2 weeks ago

Thank you very much! Spent a lot of time designing and testing until it printed and felt good, so I am glad to hear that it looks good as well.

Anywhere I keep my phone often enough to need a stand ought to be charging it too.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago

Mostly agree but sometimes power isn't available where you want the stand. Also, this is a pretty keen design - might be worth modifying with a simple carve out on the back to pop in a Qi charger.

Flip that bad boi upside down :) booyah

[-] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago

To preserve port life I keep it capped and only ever charge inductively.

[-] IMALlama@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Odds are your phone has a modern connector so this isn't necessary. I replaced my pixel 3a, which I bought in September 2019, last December. Thanks to wired phone projection, I cycled its USB-C connector twice a day for 5 years and 3 months. That's ~4,000 cycles. The connector specification calls for a 10,000 cycle lifetime.

I did have to de-lint the connector from time to time, but other than that I had no issues.

Not to say that you shouldn't use inductive charging of course :)

[-] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

That lifetime assumes a clean testing setup.

In the real world, grit and dust will work into the charging port and wear down the connectors much sooner.

[-] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Um, well the other elephant in the room is that if you cap off the port and never use it, it's also irrelevant what its service lifetime is since you're never going to use it.

[-] kek_w_lol@lemmy.one 3 points 2 weeks ago

Fair take. I usually don't keep it in one place. I mostly watch long form content while I work and have never encountered the problem of my phone needing to be charged in the vertical orientation. I may implement your suggestion at a later date, but you are welcome to remix my design if you are unwilling to wait. Cheers, and thanks for the feedback!

Thank you very much! I am jlad you like it!

Just by looking at it, this model should scale easily in the slicer. (Scale up by 21.5% if my math is correct.) It may look odd, but even scaling up one axis (Y) may work too.

[-] superb 2 points 1 week ago

When did you design this? I remember printing a very similar phone stand years ago. I used it for a long time, it was great!

[-] kek_w_lol@lemmy.one 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I was made aware (with threats) of a very similar design when I posted this on reddit. I designed this independently and was made aware of the design after I had already uploaded my model.
