I don't follow the logic behind exempting mentally disabled from the death penalty.

Not that I'm for killing anyone, but if the theory behind the death penalty is that they're too dangerous to allow to live, why would that change if someone's mentally disabled?

Because the death penalty isn't used like that in America. Its about punishment and (theoretically but not actually) deterrence.

The people who are too dangerous to be allowed to live typically don't face consequences until they're bad enough for an international problem.

We don't execute leaders or ideological terrorists nearly as much as we execute those who commit crimes of particular personal brutality.
