About 3 years ago, I watched the stargate movie and really loved it. I immediately tried to watch sg1 but had a really hard time due to the characters being recast with actors who are significantly different than their movie counterparts.

Well, I guess enough time has passed and I got through the first 3ish episodes and have been hooked since then.

I just started season 2 this afternoon.

Please no spoilers.

It's funny because after watching the series a few times, now I think it's the movie that was badly cast.

Daniel from the tv show is so freaking good. The one in the movie was not bad, but the cast on tv is so good in comparison.

The one in the Movie…

Don’t do James Spader so dirty

Loved Atlantis. Tbf, I loved Universe. Stargate is awesome.

[-] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 20 points 2 weeks ago

Another lover of Universe here.

I want to enjoy it, but I've tried multiple times and I just can't make it through.

What helped me is having no expectations and not looking at it as a Stargate show. It is kinda good that way. Come season 2, Stargate vibes start to shine through, especially in the second half. It really got cancelled just as it got really good.

[-] devfuuu@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I've watched a few episodes. It's just very different vibe and show. After some episodes I started to care for what was happening a little, but yeah, it's not for everyone. I don't even remember anything about it besides that they were on the edges of what is known and there was Oneil being a badass.

My issue with Universe was the vibe and tone. It was very far from the kinda cozy, friendly and adventurous group of SG-1. Universe was filled with drama, assholes and was very gloomy.

On its own, Universe was okay. Especially season 2, but it just didn’t fit “The Stargate universe”.

It was around the time SciFi was becoming dark and moody (i.e. BattleStar Galactica and stuff). This just kind of followed the formula.

Thanks! My wife and I will watch Atlantis together one I finish sg1. She is a trekkie and is vaguely interested and when we saw mamoa was in it, I think she was sold.

[-] Tippon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

It might be worth watching them together. There are a few SG-1 and Atlantis crossover episodes, and the stories affect both series, rather than being one off gimmicks

[-] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks for the heads up!

I think it might be too difficult to do that though as I’ll have to coordinate which episodes of sg1 to watch and wait for my wife to catch up on atlantis 😂

[-] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I think it's fine to watch one series after the other just so you aren't bouncing around too much. You're still a ways off anyway, you'll know with no uncertainty when Atlantis gets spun off on SG1.

[-] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

I figured they would do something with everyone so they can use sg-1s popularity to advertise Atlantis.

I’m totally doing 1 after the other for simplicity.

I’m nearing the end of season 2 and most episodes are just fantastic!

I typically have it on all day while I’m doing house work or my actually work.

[-] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

There was effort on the Atlantis show runners' part to give it a distinct identity. While SG1 characters do show up, the show holds off because it is trying to get people invested in the Atlantis characters.

If you're a Trekkie, it's sort of like DS9 and Voyager. Technically they overlap and there are references to events in DS9 in Voyager, but it's stuff on the edges that you can probably figure out the context even if you don't know the details of the other show.

[-] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Oh yeah, what I meant was like the way tng and ds9 had a hand off episode to introduce the tng fans to ds9.

I, too, am on my first watch thru. Most of the way through season 8, and thanks to this, I'm concurrently watching season 1 of Atlantis. 5/7, would recommend.

Edit: ducking autocorrupt

Stargate SG-1 is awesome! It's my favourite Sci-fi show and I've probably rewatched it 4-5 times 😅

I love sg1. I think I first got hooked on Atlantis and eventually properly picked sg1 later since I only knew it from watching some random eps passively on tv I think.

I freaking love it. It's one of my favorite shows. The mythology and character development over so many seasons is amazing and exactly what I want from a story, specially for long running ones.

You are in for an amazing trip, since the first episodes are usually the weakest when a new show starts until the characters and the actors are properly in sync and comfortable with each other.

I've only watched it 2 or 3 times. I should probably plan a new rewatch.

The Stargate series literally have the best tool for storytelling: The Stargate itself. You can literally tell any story you want, because anything could literally be on other end of the wormhole.

I don’t understand why we haven’t gotten any proper Stargate games yet…

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Please no spoilers.

I tecommend not being too worried if you do see a spoiler about the show because it is done vey well overall and the way the episodes play out tends to be far more important than any twists or reveals.

[-] WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 weeks ago

I envy you.

It's a good show. Have fun!

[-] lordnikon@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Recast? I thought O'Neil was in the movie O'Neill was in the TV show.

[-] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Richard Dean Anderson is not Kurt Russell
