I feel like most talked-about shows and movies are American, what are some good European ones?

Bad Banks

A drama in the banking business. Germany, Brussels, Luxembourg. German , French, English or Dutch. All the languages are in it. Canโ€™t get more European than that.

Dark is a great German show about time travel.

Deutschland 83 is a German Cold War spy series.

!mediatheque@feddit.org has tips for streaming in Germany.

Dark is easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. Don't watch it dubbed in English, though. Terrible quality. Watch it in German.

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 2 points 6 days ago

I don't think i've enjoyed something more dubbed than subtitled

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 1 points 6 days ago

Weird. I found it totally unwatchable dubbed.

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 1 points 6 days ago

O maybe I should've wrote it the other way around lol: I never like something dubbed, always prefer subbed.

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 4 points 6 days ago

Sone obvious ones like Sherlock, Broadchurch or Taskmaster.

I haven't seen La casa de papel or Borgen yet but consistently hear that they're good. Also have heard good things about the british-austrian production Vienna Blood.

For lgbtq teen drama, I can recommend the Nordic Young Royals and Tore.

Btw, Germany and Austria did an adaption of The Bridge set at an alpine mountain pass, called Pagan Peak (OT: Der Pass).

Shetland is amazing - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shetland_(TV_series) ;

Now I watch Vigil - quite good too - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vigil_(TV_series) ;

Finnish TV series Exit is disturbingly good - https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exit_(suomalainen_televisiosarja) . Would like to watch norwegian original.

North sea connection is also great - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15654810/ ;

Cry wolf - very good, Fargo vibes on swedish-finnish border - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cry_Wolf_(TV_series) .

The UK makes some good TV. Broadchurch, Good Omens, Deadwater Fell (I may have been on a David Tenant kick, but he's a good actor!). A bit older, but Black Books is pretty great.

I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the French series called "The Bureau" in English. I watched the first season and it is really must see TV. It is an espionage thriller.

The swedish-danish "The Bridge" was also good. It is a Nordic Noir crime drama.

I would also recommend the German show "Babylon Berlin".

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago

Loved The Bridge! Have you seen Killing Eve? The main guy is in it too.

[-] blueridge@feddit.nu 2 points 6 days ago

No, I haven't seen it, but I would probably like it. Thank you for the recommendation! ๐Ÿ˜Š

[-] Szewek@lemm.ee 3 points 6 days ago

It is a weird niche, but if you like fckd up cartoons like South Park or Rick and Morty, then check out the Polish series Exorcist (on Netflix, though I am sure you can also find it elsewhere...)

I have too many people into arthouse around, but especially when it comes to movies I have long been watching more European than American stuff.

Ruben ร–stlund makes both movies that are fun and deep (e.g. "Triangle of Sadness", "The Square").

I love Kusturica's movies. A touch of magical realism and humour from the Balkans. His political views are... let's just say you do not have to agree much with the views of an artist to enjoy his work ;)

"Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World" is a great recent comedy from the Romanian Radu Jude.

"Blue Is the Warmest Colour" is a beautiful lesbian love story.

Petro Almodovar has made incredible melodramas.

I can also very much recommend "Cold War" by Paweล‚ Pawlikowski (another love story, but this time with a very sensitible perspective on Central European history in the background).

Lukas Dhont makes very touching movies, I have rarely cried as much on a movie as on his "Close".

[-] SchwertImStein@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago

Blue is the warmest colour has so many lesbian sex scenes that it became a meme for that

In France, for TV productions, we've had Le bureau des lรฉgendes, Kabul Kitchen, Kamelott (don't try this latter one if you don't speak French). There's probably many others I'm not thinking of right now.

As for movies, there's quite a few, none of which I can remember at the moment :)

[-] srpwnd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 days ago

Babylon Berlin is amazing

For Italy i'd say withoht a doubt Romanzo Criminale for the shows. (dk how it's called in english maybe Criminal Novel?). It's really something else how cool is that serie. For the movies i'd say the "dollar trilogy" from Sergio Leone is a must. "The great beauty" is absolutely stunning (won an oscar if i remeber correctly) I would add some classics like 'il medico della mutua" from Alberto Sordi and many others of his films are considered classics. Maybe not a common suggestion but i absolutely love the first "Vacanze di Natale" which created an entire series of sequels (vacanze di natale 2000, natale in india ecc) and a whole genre in Italy called Cinepanettoni, which are comedies (generally funny for a boomer-like sense of humor) coming out near christmas. I found the original much funnier than the others, even after all these years, and it's also a funny and quite spot on representations of the stereotypes of the italian man in the '80s. I might be biased cause i love that time period and since i didn't lived it i love to watch somethings that can "bring me back". Last i should mention Rose Island which is an amazing film for a cool real world story, link to the wikipedia article which i could say contains some spoilers haha. I'm sorry if i didn't provide all the english translations for the titles, and i'm also not sure all of these are dubbed in english or your native language. Hope you can enjoy some of these :)

The Brits make great English language television, from Sherlock to Downton Abbey to Monty Python. Currently watching Killing Eve wich is great, same as Toxic Town. Can't think of any others by heart, but there is loads.

[-] late_night@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 days ago

Peep show and Chewing gum are some of my favorite shows, I highly recommend both

[-] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 4 points 1 week ago

Killing Eve is great for one series. Good for two. The third was rubbish. We didn't bother with the fourth.

[-] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago

If you like the first season of Killing Eve, then you'll probably love Fleabag.

[-] huppakee@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

Thanks, I've been tipped both, probably will watch fleabag too someday.

[-] Jackied@midwest.social 14 points 1 week ago

I love taskmaster from the uk. Itโ€™s a comedy show and all stuff is available for free on YouTube. Also great way to get to know some new comedians

[-] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

They did try to make an US version and it sucked ass

NZ and Australia have amazing versions too, the Norwegian one is decent too.

Swedes and Finns changed the format to include a rotating weekly guest that kinda ruins it (they canโ€™t mix tasks between episodes)

Doctor Who, The IT Crowd, Bernd das Brot, Dark, Raumpatrouille Orion, Real Humans, Le Cinquiรจme Elรฉment .... plus hundreds of others.

[-] Keener@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

Father Ted also if you're a fan of the IT Crowd

[-] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 4 points 1 week ago

The best sitcom ever, bar none.

[-] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

That's good, but my question wasn't if they exist.

[-] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, those are the first ones I could come up with from the top of my head. I just wrote that sentence because I watched hundreds of other German movies and TV series, some italo-westerns, fairy tales from the soviet block when I was young, Netflix recommendations from Scandinavia... And I'm pretty sure I left out many good ones. Whether the subjective answer helps you, also kinda depends what genre you like and which languages you're able to understand.

Americans are remaking this as High Potential, but it doesnโ€™t work IMO
