Hello,

while preparation our upcoming Lemmy update we're also be updating to a newer database version, which will provide additional performance benefits and functionality.

We are planning for around 10 minutes of downtime for the database update between 19:00-19:30 UTC on 22nd of February. This is not yet the planned Lemmy update, we will be announcing that separately when we are ready.

edit: You can convert this to your local time here: https://inmytime.zone/?iso=2025-02-22T19%3A00%3A00.000Z

edit 2: The database upgrade has been completed successfully.

Just repeat to yourself, “It’s just a site. I should really just relax!”

Best of luck on your restore-from-back-up test tomorrow! 😉

What will I do with my life during that downtime?

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

That’s what alt accounts on other instances are for. Fediverse, baby!

I need to come up with a creative username. But you are correct.

I have no idea what time that is and I figure I will probably be sleeping

...also be updating to a newer database version, which will provide additional performance benefits and functionality.

Which functionalities are you interested in?

For me the faster VACUUM would be reason enough to migrate :-) But I think overall it's best to keep up-to-date and a few minutes downtime is worth it.

incremental backups might also be something worth looking into

[-] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

I always thought it's just something you say, whenever upgrading to anything newer. Even if there are no additional benefits.

[-] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

One benefit is that you have a tested upgrade path if you keep up with versions. If you don’t and you make big jumps in version when you update, there’s a chance that you’ll run into an untested situation that causes an issue.

What about "read-only friday"? :)

[-] Rooki@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

I would say it is rather opposite for a volunteer driven team. "Read only-Mo-Fr " because we have more time on weekends in general.

sick one. Thank you for your efforts.
