Is tragic accident. Sometimes airplane explode in sky, such is life in Russia.

It's about time for Yakov Smirnoff jokes to become popular again.

[-] Throbbing_Banjo@midwest.social 6 points 1 year ago

Sounds like you need to take a trip down to Branson, Missouri, where Mr Smirnoff's popularity never faded!

[-] Arrakis@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

At least he didn't fall out the window

[-] DarkFox@pawb.social 2 points 1 year ago

As far as we know.

[-] awwwyissss@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

Maybe the Kremlin just wanted revenge for the IL-22M Utkin shot down on his way to Moscow.

[-] Godric@lemmy.world 57 points 1 year ago

Who could have seen this coming?

[-] TheCrispyDud@kbin.social 64 points 1 year ago

Those on the ground probably.

[-] qwertyWarlord@lemmy.world 48 points 1 year ago

Shame, he had one chance to do something great and he threw it away. Straight to hell for his war crimes, good riddance

[-] Rob@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Ehh… “He had one chance to do something great” almost makes it sound a bit positive. It wouldn’t have come close to making up for the complete shit stain he left on human history.

Good riddance indeed.

It's interesting how the BBC claims that Prigozhin was the sole founder of Wagner. Most news services don't acknowledge Dmitry Utkin at all these days.

And good news, he was listed on the passenger manifest as well. Another dead Nazi is always good news. It's just sad that it took them turning against Putin for it to happen. They should have died years ago instead.

[-] awwwyissss@lemm.ee 22 points 1 year ago

Yeah, the Kremlin has finally managed to kill an actual Nazi.

[-] Mouette@jlai.lu 2 points 1 year ago

They were pretty good at it back in the days

[-] awwwyissss@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Not really... Nazis fought to the outskirts of Moscow, and the USSR depended on lend-lease from the Americans to win the war.

[-] Mouette@jlai.lu 2 points 1 year ago

Hahaha that's false just look at the number most German died on East front (3millions), it was by far the most deadly and Russia been in war from way longer than USA who came at the end.

[-] MaybeItWorks@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

I sort of agree with you, but not quite. The Russians sacrificed A LOT of their own people to beat the Nazis. The weather, terrain, and German leadership disagreements had a lot to do with it. That being said, Russia really won the war with the Eastern Front and yes the Americans showed up late.

The Russians didn’t beat the Nazis because they were particularly good, unfortunately. They had home field advantage, winters were terrible, and Russia was willing to sacrifice anyone necessary to win. They fight differently over there.

[-] awwwyissss@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, and also look at the number of Russian soldiers who died on the eastern front (6.6 million)

The US joined the war the same year the Nazis invaded Russia, 1941.

[-] sndmn@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Better late than never!

[-] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago

That headline has changed - originally it said he was "feared" dead. Not sure by who tbh.

A Wagner-associated Telegram channel named "Grey Zone" claimed the jet was shot down by Russian air defenses.

[-] autotldr@lemmings.world 14 points 1 year ago

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list of a plane which crashed in Russia, killing all 10 on board.

Earlier, a Wagner-linked Telegram channel Grey Zone reported that the jet was shot down by air defences in Tver region, north of Moscow.

Prigozhin led a failed mutiny against the Russian armed forces in June.

This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly.

Thank you, good bot.

[-] magnor@lemmy.magnor.ovh 13 points 1 year ago

I'm surprised he did not fall out of the plane's window. I hear windows are very dangerous in Russia.

[-] Wolpertinger@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 year ago

I saw this coming. If you aim at the king, you best not miss.

I don't know what made Prigozhin stop his advance, but he must have accepted that he was a dead man the moment he did.

[-] EchoCranium@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 year ago

This took a lot longer to happen than I expected. Do Putin's plane next.

[-] Mouette@jlai.lu 6 points 1 year ago

Do you expect Putin to shoot himself ?

[-] EchoCranium@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago

That would also be acceptable.

Prigozhin: surprised pikachu

[-] beam@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

How possible is it that he has staged his own death?

[-] demonquark@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Tbh, this is what I’m thinking. No way Prigozhin would just go back to Russia without an exit plan. Any sane person knows that accidental death is the only way this would end.

Why wait for Putin to kill you, if you could just do it yourself?

Alternatively, it would make sense if this is part of deal he made to call off the coup. Putin promises to fake kill him, Prigozhin promises to stay fake dead.

[-] RaincoatsGeorge@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 year ago

Whatever was said on the day he was moving towards Moscow is what dictated how this all played out, no question.

He completely stopped dead in his tracks and walked away like nothing happened. He was either stupid enough to think all was well and Putin would leave him alone or he thought he could move much more freely than he should have been.

I doubt he was under the complete control of Putin because why waste a missile on a plane when you could toss him out a window or really do whatever you want. He could peel his skin off over the course of months and pay doctors to keep him alive.

I think Prigo was being tracked by Russian intelligence and they waited for a window to take him out and ensure deniability as per usual.

We likely wont know for decades.
