The Canadian government has insisted that information on domestic goods is readily available to all trading partners, even including nations that recently elected a felony-convicted game show host to be their head of state. Instead, the United States has decided to employ a rarely-chosen trade tactic that international economists refer to as the “fuck around and find out” model.

This doesn't even have to be The Onion, but just straight news. This is exactly how it is going to work.

I saw some of the dipshit commenters on a WSJ article giving examples of things affected and how their prices might change - lots of "Well, I don't need these things, and paying 5 cents more for making brown people suffer is worth it, anyway!"

Yeah, I guess we will see....

[-] JimVanDeventer@lemmy.world 38 points 5 months ago

But the twist is that it still won't be portrayed as Trump's fault. Unfair Canada declares war for no reason or whatever.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago

Oh, without a doubt. I've already seen some of their ridiculous people try to prep their stupid base with "....but it will be worth it" kind of narratives. I bet you'll hear more than a few of the marks parrot this idiocy.

Did no one watch “How It’s Made”?

That’s how I found out what goods are made in Canada.

Like, you know, gum. Fucking bubble gum. The smallest-possible, easiest-to-make, most-ubiquitous thing. Found in every convenience store, drug store, newsstand, and vending machine.

Do we make that in the States? Nooo… we gotta import that shit from our neighbors to the North. Like, do we make anything here?

[-] tegs_terry@feddit.uk 19 points 5 months ago

Not the raised lettering on every toy saying 'made in china'?

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

We do but NAFTA really made things spread out. We've made a lot more progress unifying the North American economies than people think. This is going to be ten times as painful as Brexit was for the British. And to undo it Mexico and Canada are going to demand we take on a trade deficit with them as a way of helping their economies in case the deal goes south with the president after whoever is fixing this mess.

[-] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 22 points 5 months ago

Machined components!

You stupid sonobabich! You know a machined part costs less in Canada than here. But that's not going to make parts here cost less! Its going to make my business fail instead!

It's going to be a little painful not having a job and living in the streets with my wife and kids freezing to death. It's fucking snowing outside.

I can design and sell a few things here and there but a few means machining is expensive. In the US you must buy a Shit ton of parts to make the price per part work, but if you fuck up on an order, that's a huge deal. From Canada I can order a few parts, change something, order again. The scrap cost goes into the price to the costumer. In not gonna get fired if I screwup one order! (Famous last words). I don't get paid less either. But if one screw up costs now as much as ten, then the price of the part becomes impossible to sell....think $15 for two small bottles of water at the AMC theater...theaters are done. I paid because I was thirsty, but fuck if I'm ever going back to watch a movie. At least I'm boot legging my own water.

If you're actually in danger of homelessness I encourage you to look at the many guides to doing it in a way that makes it easier to get back off the street as soon as possible. A lot of people try to hold on for far too long and end up in legal trouble and blacklisted from renting a place.

As to McFuckstick, there's not much we can do until 2026. I'm sorry he's put you in a bad position.

[-] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

I'm not gonna go homeless but I'm definitely in negative growth.

In December I had $300 bucks on a gift card that I wanted to spend on my photography hobbies. Now I've just loaded the monies into the bank account and my hobby is looking at the wall. Looking at my phone is enough photography I guess.

But I remember how it was to be homeless when I had just migrated here. How can I be here looking towards a future that includes that as a real possibility? I'm just here awaiting the new part pricing I'm gonna face. It sucks.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Yeah I can't imagine that. I hope you come through okay.

[-] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 19 points 5 months ago

Americans didn’t chose this.

[-] Kiwi_fella@lemmy.world 71 points 5 months ago

Those who voted certainly did. Those who chose to not vote did also. I don't live in America but it was incredibly obvious this was coming. America chose to be represented by by this guy who said quite clearly what he was going to do.

[-] veroxii@aussie.zone 18 points 5 months ago

And everything that's happened so far was clearly spelled out in the project 2025 document. But people don't read and now they're all Pikachu face surprised.

[-] EldritchFeminity 9 points 5 months ago

"Surely the leopards won't eat my face!"

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago

His owner/donor fElon said as much, too. That we are going to suffer, but it will be worth it (to billionaires, I'm sure, not to the peasants he thinks need to "live within their means").

Those who didn't vote don't matters. I don't know why we're supposed to acknowledge their existence in these discussions. In every way that actually matters, Americans chose this.

[-] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Soooo…. all of Germany chose Hitler? Of course they didn’t.

I’m an American. I did not chose trump. Let’s stop with the blanket statements.

[-] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 20 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

The statement "Americans chose this" does not mean or imply that all Americans chose this but congrats on being trivially right in a pedantic and irrelevant way. Most voters chose this, and that is the only thing that matters .

I’m an American. I did not chose trump. Let’s stop with the blanket statements.

Yeah I'll definitely keep your delicate feelings at the forefront of my mind as your leaders madness starts destroying my country next week.

Less than half in fact. Surprisingly, more than a third of our voting body didn’t vote. And that’s how he won.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 43 points 5 months ago

If you didn't vote then you chose this.

[-] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago

100% agree.

[-] DrinkMonkey@lemmy.ca 10 points 5 months ago

One third of Americans (non voters) were happy to watch whilst another third (MAGAts) attempts to murder ~~the other third~~ everyone.

Umm what was all that noise and wind about back in November then?

[-] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

You mean all the bots and edgelord kids telling everyone not to vote against trump, and instead vote third party? Or did you mean all the bots and edgelord kids that shouted at everyone to stay home in protest?

Because if it wasn’t either of these two- I saw a lot of people urging others to vote for Harris. Otherwise known as the one person that had a chance to defeat trump. All while warning them of what would happen if they didn’t.

And if I recall correctly- those warnings looked a lot like what’s happening right fucking now.

MANY of us didn’t choose this. So don’t blame all of America for this shit. Be precise- blame the asshole single-issue dipshits that protested their way into a trump victory…There’s all still around-

Go on… Be my guest.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 9 points 5 months ago

I see you're very concerned with third party voters. (Again) How much progress have you made replacing First-past-the-post voting in your state? You do want to solve the spoiler effect problem right?

Nows the time to dig in and fight for the reform that would resolve your issues with people voting outside the two party system.

Here are some videos to help you out. Best of luck to you.

No. See, you don't personally get to write the narrative.

Here's how it is:

You are in the "United" states until you tell us otherwise. You are the ones renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. You are the ones who, by majority vote, decided that this was to be our world and our future.

Your people. Your culture. Your country. Your leader. Your choices.

Fucking own it. And if you don't like it, or this response, FUCKING STAND UP AND CHANGE IT. But don't ask ME to give a wet slap about your feelings or the when it is your country is an imperial expansionist empire trying to kick over anthills. I don't owe you that courtesy and I'm disinclined to politeness of late towards my Southern neighbors.

Do you, when you reflect on history, make such subtle distinctions? For example did Germany start world war 1 and 2 or should we defer to the feelings of the objectors to those conflicts when ascribing cause?

Dumbass.

Be prepared to spend more on trucks. Ford makes their seats in Canada

[-] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Also truckers crossing the border now have to pay double the fee to cross.

It's not Americans choosing this. Its our dictator, Felonious 47

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 44 points 5 months ago

you can't get out of it this time. he won the popular vote. not voting is voting.

[-] Odd_so_Star_so_Odd@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

He didn't win, vote-suppression won.

Besides you could argue the non-vote were the more popular choice because people are fed up with FPTP-voting.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

that's not an unknown. vote suppression has always been a thing. especially dem voters know this. I'm not talking about the voters; I'm talking about non voters. you don't show up, you vote for whoever comes up. vote suppression did not suppress 86 million votes.

Winning the popular vote doesn't mean everyone voted for him. Besides, realistically he didn't even do that.

[-] freddydunningkruger@lemmy.world 29 points 5 months ago

I guess you missed the part where OP wrote "NOT VOTING IS VOTING".

In the 2020 election, 81,283,501 people voted for Biden while 74,223,975 voted for Trump.

In the 2024 election, 75,017,613 voted for Harris, while 77,302,580 voted for Trump.

Thata 155,507,476 - 152,230,193 = 3,187,283 fewer people voting.

Biden got 81.2m votes vs Harris getting 75m votes... in other words, people who showed up to vote for Biden in 2020 sat out and didn't vote in 2024, which directly resulted in Trump winning.

Not voting is voting, get it now?

[-] Deello@lemm.ee 4 points 5 months ago

I commented saying that I don't think Trump got 77,302,580 votes. Get it now? Bringing up Bidens and Harris's vote count is irrelevant.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

are you claiming election fraud?

that's ridiculous but either way you're missing the point.

he got more than 77 million votes. close to 86 million people didn't vote. like it or not, that's still 86 million votes.

not voting isn't a way to say "I don't like either one", it says "I'm on board with whoever wins by people who actually show up". so that's a vote for mango mussolini. would've been for Harris if that 1.6% margin swung the other way, but it didn't.

so essentially he got the stamp of approval of around 160 million people.

Nearly 90 million voting eligible Americans chose to not vote at all with a confirmed white supremacist, rapist and convicted felon on the ballot.

Many of us warned that if he won, democracy would end forever.
