I mean I get it’s annoying. I also think “carnivore diet” is just a dumb grift like “raw milk” or whatever. But I don’t think you have a right to complain here. Someone created a community for people following this diet, it’s obvious they will ban anyone like you who is vocally opposed to the diet.

[-] rollinghills@lemm.ee 7 points 2 months ago

I did not comment on their community, I just downvoted.

[-] Scoopta@programming.dev 12 points 2 months ago

This almost makes it worse tbh. You're not even trying to interact or provide anything of value to the community, you're just going in to downvote.

[-] inv3r5ion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 months ago

Raw milk is worse because of the bird flu risk. Some dumbass is gonna drink tainted milk, get sick, and the virus will eventually evolve to better infect humans in ways that hurt us.

A carnivore diet just harms themselves and the animals they’re eating. But raw milk has the potential to cause/accelerate another pandemic.

I’ve been a lifelong vegetarian however the vegans do have a point… what other mammal goes out of their way to drink other mammals milk?! I mean there’s some fringe cases of different species adopting each other and weaning but usually humans are involved in that.

YDI.

We (Lemmy users in general) have an idiotic tendency to take matters into our own hands, instead of letting the people in charge handle it, even when the later would be better for everyone. And that's exactly what you did.

If you believe that a community promotes harmful content, report it to the instance admins. Make sure to back up your claim with studies and the likes. Don't simply blanket downvote everything in it, otherwise you're creating a precedent for other people to do the same with other communities.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 18 points 2 months ago

YDI. report dangerous content (which i agree this is) to admins for moderation or defederation.

but blanket downvote trolling is a real issue that any community mods should be allowed to address.

[-] rollinghills@lemm.ee 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

People downvote the posts on !linuxsucks@lemmy.world all the time.

So it’s only wrong if !vegan@lemmy.world does it now? But not a dangerous diet that increases the chance of heart disease, cancers and nutrient deficiencies.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

!linuxsucks moderators should be allowed to act on blanket downvoting behavior if they so choose.

i don’t think i said anything about !vegan but they should be allowed to also, if they want.*

*edit: okay maybe i am remembering the situation you are talking about?where some community was banning every user who did even one downvote, thereby exploiting lemmy’s sorting algorithm and getting all their posts to !all. that’s a different thing from dealing with blanket downvotes and fair to criticize in my opinion

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 6 points 2 months ago

On top of that, !vegan@lemmy.world was on LW, who had to update their rules to ban "harmful behaviour".

Interestingly enough, lemm.ee doesn't have such rule, so it's okay for this mod to do so. !vegan@vegantheoryclub.org could also ban people who downvote, nobody would see that as powertripping, they do what they want on their instance.

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

Do I see you following people around replying to unrelated threads to continue an argument from elsewhere? Not cool

YDI.

[-] Anarki_ 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Yeah nah you're in the wrong here. Report to admins, block the community and move on.

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 months ago

YDI, if you believe a community or instance doesn't have a legitimate right to exist because it's dangerous you need to report the dangerous content instead of simply downvoting them to suppress them. Also mass downvoting whole communities or users does count as an act of vote manipulation or abuse.

So to recap, you've not avoided reporting content you believe to be dangerous, but also have engaged in abusive voting behaviors. Voting patterns that many instances (not just communities) would indeed ban someone for.

@rollinghills@lemm.ee

Draconic kind of hit the nail on the head with this one. Going into a community you don’t like and mass downvoting everything isn’t super awesome, and there’s no rule against the moderator of that community banning you for it.

This is one of those situations where the best thing for you to do is disengage

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

Thank you for clarifying!

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 6 points 2 months ago

Sunaurus stepped down, the main admin is now @EllaSpiggins@lemm.ee

[-] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 months ago

Ah thank you for pointing that out, I'll make sure to CC them instead next time.

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago

blanket down voting every post and comment in a community

If true, this explains it all right there, regardless of the underlying issues (I mean regardless of ethics of right and wrong etc.). You could just leave the community if you don't like the content, perhaps making your own, or make a respectful post outlining your reasoning to try to convince people, etc. But acting like a toxic asshole doesn't seem like it's helpful to anyone?

Again, if true.

[-] rollinghills@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

There is no rule saying you can’t downvote the posts and downvoting isn’t “uncivil”

[-] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk 12 points 2 months ago

Being a cunt is though

If you act like a dick regarding others' beliefs, they will shun you. It's been like that since the dawn of time

Would you walk into someone's barbecue and start your preaching like that, then act all confused when someone fuckin decks you with an entire, raw pig?

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 8 points 2 months ago

Would you walk into someone’s barbecue and start your preaching like that, then act all confused when someone fuckin decks you with an entire, raw pig?

That's more or less what people did on vegan communities. When they got banned, there was a whole drama: https://feddit.uk/post/17377857

[-] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk 1 points 2 months ago

Two wrongs never made a right

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

Indeed, just evidencing the double standard

[-] rollinghills@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Then the people who against veganism need to stop brigading vegan communities and stop crying when they get banned.

Of course you resort to name calling and being rude.

[-] Enkers@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

It's wild that this exact same thing happened before, and the general consensus was that the vegan community was wrong to ban assholes that'd downvote every vegan post.

[-] rollinghills@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It's so bizarre how people were circlejerking about the vegans from that incident but then act like I was a jerk for downvoting posts about dangerous diet.

Vegans cant ban downvoters but carnivores can what a joke.

According to these people the vegan communities are "insular, closed-minded and echo chambers" while the carnivore communities are just "protecting their way of life"

[-] Enkers@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I'm kinda on the fence. If the community is allowed to exist, you should be banned for down voting every post. If you don't like a community's content, just block it and move on.

What pisses me off is the blatant double standard.

(Edit: I do obviously think communities that endorse animal abuse shouldn't be allowed, though.)

[-] rollinghills@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I suppose contacting the admins about the dangers of the diet would've been more constructive.

Being banned from the carnivore community is a badge of honour like getting booted out of r/vegetarian.

[-] satans_methpipe@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I blocked that sub as soon as I saw it in /everything.

It smelled like a troll meeting area (acrid sugared vinegar sweats from their 'sauces').

[-] rollinghills@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

That’s smart advice!

Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1039 readers
188 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.
