wow, that's a really strange trajectory for a tropical storm, they don't normally make it that far north. another sweet effect of climate change I guess, hurricanes in California.

[-] GorbinOutOverHere@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago

Wouldn't that be good for California what with all the drought

[-] MaxOS@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago

I think with big rain events, most of the water just flows into the ocean and isn't captured or absorbed.

[-] GorbinOutOverHere@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Wow that sounds pretty dumb

[-] cynesthesia@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

degradation of the ability of land to retain water through development combined with the same development causing more extreme storm events is indeed dumb

[-] emizeko@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

water takes time to seep into the ground, the best thing for drought is frequent, but not torrential, rain

[-] GorbinOutOverHere@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

No like, catch the water though? Mandatory rainwater catchment systems on literally everything? Idk

Maybe i'm wrong but i don't think i've ever seen an image of California where every house has 55 gallon barrels under every gutter, seems like something that would like, help

the nerds at the World Meteorological Organization spelled it with one L because they didn't want to join the Clinton Death List

The one time you'd hope to see Florida in the news, and it's gotta be the wrong coast.

Shoulda voted harder, Commiefornia hillary-contempt

[-] macabrett@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

Okay this is me being a big dumbass, but aren't tropical storms / hurricanes usually hitting the east coast? I always assumed the ocean conditions were such that the west coast wasn't really susceptible to them but I guess I've never really learned why that is. Is this happening kinda wild?

They're equally likely to form in the Atlantic and Pacific, but are affected differently by el Nino and la Nina. This is an el Nino year, that's why so many have formed in the Pacific this year. As such, there should be a reduction in Atlantic storms

[-] macabrett@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Interesting, thanks for the explanation!
