Thia is a bit darker than the meme offers, but, its very hard to emphasize the shear scope of environmental destruction that was wrought upon New Zealand. This article might be a starting point for those interested, but it doesn't even come remotely close to making clear what was lost, especially in the European period of colonization.

Its easy to think of a place like New Zealand in its current environmental context: sheep, cows, field crops, and a mix of European and North American species of timber selected for rapid growth and yield. A visit to the Kauri museum in Matehoke puts this history into stark relief, when you find out that prior to European colonization, even with the invasive species and environmental disturbance that the Māori had brought, NZ was effectively an in-tact time capsule of plant and animal evolution from almost 200 million years ago.

The scale and scope of the environmental destruction laid bare through the introduction of Europeans to NZ is simply unfathomable, to the point of being almost complete. So even though small in scale, these kinds of forests preserves hold some of the last remaining plant and animal species from the entire evolutionary legacy of the planet.

And if you've never watched Ancient Aliens, this is what it's like.

The Baghdad battery was a clay pot containing vinegar and two different metals, which could produce a voltage of 0.5 volts. Therefore, we can reasonably conclude aliens used these to power their spaceships. *Cuts to poorly rendered CGI shot of lightning bolts shooting out of the pyramids up to flying saucers.*

A lot of crazy "supernatural mystery" stuff consists of listing a bunch of things that are more-or-less true, but omitting one or two really important facts in an attempt to make the other details seem odd.

Not enough "It was home to the Nephilim and Jötun, where they preserved this land as the ancient burial site for the ancient predecessors of the Egyptians, from amongst the stars."

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 days ago

which as a nordic person is always silly because everyone here knows the jötun were forced down to the netherlands

Tom Scott video on it. So apparently the Volcano granted the legal right of a person, they can sue you if you dare defame them.

seems rather defaming to say its invincibility and circular shape are "mysterious" when they're both established by law; maybe the volcano can sue The Sun? 🤔

The Sun always deserve a little bit of lava

Of course it's the sun (british fox news but with more nudity). Maybe they're onto something by calling new Zealand the land of hobbits through...

[-] prex@aussie.zone 1 points 2 days ago

I like think of Flores as the land of the hobbits. Not to take anything away from the movies or New Zealand.

Nice to see that it's working, shame to see how they ruined all of the forest around it though...
