I do love how Clock King's power is basically just weaponised autism. Memorising train timetables and factoring in expected delays to services to properly time his getaway in the middle of a fight is pretty iconic tbh.
There is, variously:
- Multiple Lazarus pits that are likely leaking into the water supply.
- The other magic resurrection place, Slaughter Swamp.
- A evil bat god (Barbatos) sealed in Gotham.
- The Hell portal under the Asylum.
- The Court of Owls secretly Illuminati'ing the place up.
- Dr. Gotham, an evil warlock who was sealed under Gotham for millennia, radiating evil.
- I wouldn't be surprised if there was more then one company dumping shit into the water supply just to dodge having to pay to dispose of it properly, but compared to magical evil of varying degrees, it's kind of a non-starter on the "This is why folks are nutso" chart.
I'm beginning to think that Gotham isn't a good place to live.
Regarding item 7, Batman Returns had Christopher Walken's character illegally dumping toxic waste, so yeah, there's at least one known case.

Well there was the time that Gotham got kicked out of America during the Lex Luthor presidency.
In how many universes has Lex been president? I remember as a kid there was one where he won the presidency and had the flash executed. Superman responds by going full authoritarian and executing him in return.
Not to mention the half-dozen times the Joker tried to poison Gotham by putting Joker Toxin in the water supply

My theory is that the Wayne family originally made their money like any other organized crime family, utilities.
I propose that the Wayne family committed a historic amount of fraud in the early 20th century by installing cheap lead piping throughout the city's water supply.
The Wayne parents knew the family secret but were killed in a vengeance plot. By the time Bruce found out, he had already been drinking the leaded water for years, so his solution of personal violence was also batshit crazy.
Imo the Batman is a crazy fail son that is doing his best to avoid a Purdue pharma like class action lawsuit. Driving him to become more and more violent towards the citizens he is trying to "save".
