I feel so bad for peertube. It's such a great idea, but until it has a full platform wide search options, and regular content producers in areas OTHER than technology, it will never catch on.

Let's not forget about the fact that there need to be general purpose viewer instances that users can sign up to for watching content, because uh while accessing through Mastodon or Lemmy is a cool feature people want to be able to save Video lists and have watch history, things that don't work at all or well when using a Link aggregator or a Microblogging service to access the content.

The bigger issue is monetization. YouTube is popular in no small part because creators are trying to make money.

If this searches all of peertube, then it needs to be the default search on every peertube page.

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 5 points 3 months ago

The administrator can enable this on their instance. It is not enabled by default.

I’ve this enabled on my instance peertube.wtf

Should be on by default, and unable to be deselected on every instance. Anyways, I went to your instance, searched "Cleveland", and among some other crappy videos that aren't worth watching I found THIS GEM

So that's cool.

Thank you for the recommendation, it’s time to try out Peertube once again.

For me, I found that there were a few channels I subscribe to on youtube that also upload on freetube, so I watch their videos on freetube instead. I also find that the image quality is better than youtube.

Peertube vs Youtube in numbers: 21k / 2.7b

Yeah they need to improve quite a bit because the platform is harder to use in comparison to Lemmy and Mastodon.

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 2 points 3 months ago

Who needs to improve exactly? The PeerTube software or the instances hosting PeerTube?

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 months ago

I would say both as Peertube needs an app and instances need to remain up and running.

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 8 points 3 months ago

True, an official mobile app is in the works. Will probably release at the end of the year. We also need more "general" PeerTube instances.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 months ago

Unfortunately the official app is currently only being developed for android so I won’t be able to use it on my iPhone. I should try to support them more so they can get around to it quicker.

I would love to see a Canadian Peertube instance perhaps Fedecan may be able to look into it.

The application will be cross-platform and so work on an iPhone

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago

Awesome news 👏

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 5 points 3 months ago

peertube.ca has been registered since last year, but no Peertube instance yet. Perhaps in the future. However, if you check this list https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances?sort=country&page=1 you will see lots of Canadian instances.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

Oh that’s interesting. I appreciate your sharp eye.

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 5 points 3 months ago

It does have a “full platform wide search”.
