So I made a passing comment of "it's almost like private car ownership is a really inefficient use of space and resources" the other day, which I didn't really pay much mind to. But all the replies were either explaining the concept of public transportation as if I don't know that's the solution to private car dependence (not in a constructive way adding to my comment or anything, I got the sense that they were trying to explain the concept to me) and someone even basically said "well I'm sure you think urban sprawl is an efficient use of space then."

Are the "normies" this oblivious to how anti-car sentiments work? Do they think we're against the concept of a metal thing with four wheels and not its effects on urban development and society? Why the hell would I be against public transit or pro urban sprawl if I hate cars? Cities before cars were invented had public transit and were tightly packed and walkable. You don't think I support that?

It's the same things people who reduce meat consumption go through. Say you want the lentil soup instead of a cheeseburger and people loose their shit. Don't let it get to you

'you don't eat meat? How dare you act so superior, I'm going to eat an extra cheeseburger tonight to spite you'

Siiiiiiiiiiiiigh

You gotta just ignore these people, they are stuck on the final boss - reading comprehension.

This is like the thing where yimbys have to listen to people explaining that housebuilding also requires building other infrastructure, as though this has never occurred to us. Boring, but best to keep your cool and explain.

There's like 7 billion more people now than when cats were invented.

I don't know what other comments you're talking about, but this seems like an application of the toddler rule. I can't find it, but there was a great tumblr thread about this. You'll never be able to prevent nay-sayers and people second guessing what you post by covering all those bases in your post or comment.

Some toddler is still going to point out that your comments about the grass being green doesn't account for bark being brown.

You just gotta pat them on the head and be kind. Eventually they'll grow up.

And yes, I left it there on purpose.

I mean, say there are 50 different commenters and assume that amongst them intelligence is randomly distributed, at least 5 of them are going to be in the dumbest 10% of people...

I mean this to say that it might not be a "normie" thing so much as a "people can be really dumb and there more people, the more reeeeeaally dumb ones there are to make an impression.

At least, that's what I like to think.

I have a friend who is 100% this guy to me. I just don't want to HAVE to have a car, but I mentioned the other day that I love Dairy Queens food but all the DQs are on like the major thoroughfares out of town so it's all car laden hellscape and he goes "ohhhh there are those things you hate!"

Bro Idgaf it's just not worth taking a bus for to me calm tf down lol

Rules

  1. Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn't choose car-centric life out of free will.

  2. No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don't use slurs. You can laugh at someone's fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

  3. Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don't post literal car fucking.

  4. No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

  5. No reposts. Before sharing, check if your post isn't a repost. Reposts that add something new are fine. Reposts that are sharing content from somewhere else are fine too.

  6. No misinformation. Masks and vaccines save lives during a pandemic, climate change is real and anthropogenic - and denial of these and other established facts will get you banned. False or highly speculative titles will get your post deleted.

  7. No harassment. Posts that (may) cause harassment, dogpiling or brigading, intentionally or not, will be removed. Please do not post screenshots containing uncensored usernames. Actual harassment, dogpiling or brigading is a bannable offence.

Please report posts and comments that violate our rules.
