“Our church elders want us to create a confrontational situation so we’ll view the outside world as hostile and see the church as the only safe community. Would you like to learn more?”

[-] TehBamski@lemmy.world 31 points 2 years ago

You know... now that you mention it... This does sound like a tactic of theirs.

[-] teuast@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

pretty sure several exmormons on the internet have either proposed or confirmed that this is something they're going for

[-] CheesyGordita@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Yeah, either the culture and people are really receptive and they convert a lot of new tithe payers, or it’s more heated and confrontational and the missionaries are further entrenched into the church. Source: was Mormon missionary for a year before I almost killed myself because of all that bullshit… so I guess it doesn’t always work out that way. Lol

Shit, this never occurred to me! So I should politely ask them if they'd like to sin instead of telling them to go fuck themselves?

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Actually, just explain the above. It'll seep into their psyche.

I love seeing Exmo content pop up on Lemmy, damn! Mission shit is brutal, but they've gotta keep the commitment-cycle churning.

their founder deserves a hell of a lot more credit than he gets for being a pioneer of Science Fiction / Fantasy writing.. dude practically invented the genre..

[-] Windswepthydra@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

That's L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology, not Jospeh Smith of Mormonism.

[-] theodewere@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

peas in a pod, but Hubbard wasn't as orignial

[-] joyjoy@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Neither was Smith. He plagiarized a lot of the BoM from View of the Hebrews.

[-] theodewere@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

oh for sure, nobody is really making anything up, but thank you for that link.. great stuff..

[-] GhostCowboy76@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Except Hubbard didn’t get a following worth hundreds of billions of USD 🤣🤣

[-] TopRamenBinLaden@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

Considering that there are a lot of rich and famous scientologists, and that scientology members are required to donate a lot of money, I am sure scientology has raised hundreds of billions of dollars.

[-] justdoit@lemm.ee 11 points 2 years ago

Poor missionaries. Teenagers are far too young to be involved in something like this. Even the victims are perpetrators in Mormonism

Oh man! I had forgotten about BaratsAndBereta YT channel. Talk about a YT time capsule.

[-] GhostCowboy76@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Hahahahah oh my God thank you. This was just the chuckle I needed before my TBM family filled weekend.
