I don't know if it's the platforms, the users, or both, but it just annoys the ever loving crap out of me that cloud storage is basically used like a digital junk drawer.

There's this article about how Gen-Z doesn't apparently understand how filesystems work which kind-of, maybe, explains things a bit. Again, I blame tech for that.

Even with search, I can't find half or more of the files co-workers swear are in there.

And I know they know how to put things into folders. We were using an on-prem fileserver until 4 years ago, and they filed things just fine. Now files just go into a "bucket" and they expect you to rummage through it to find what you need.

"My everything drawer is in this picture, and I don't like it"

I used to have this drawer. But then I grew up. Now I have five of these drawers. Progress

When I bought the house I'm in now, I decided to just dive headfirst into it: the first day, I pointed to a drawer and told it "You're the junk drawer now".

Hahaha, just the one, classy!

To be more on topic though: compared to your own hosted cloud, corporate clouds are worse in almost any way except maybe uptime and reliability. Compared to having no cloud, it's not so bad, right?

Honestly, after being 4 years into Google Drive replacing our on-prem file server, I'd rather have no cloud and a file server behind our VPN. It's just an ongoing disaster.

What I dislike is how Google drive changed the default home page to a "helpful" version where it suggests files that it thinks you want. I assume it's in response to the issue you mentioned

I keep my folders organized nicely, and I like knowing where to find something. If I need something often, I'll add a shortcut to the front page, or bookmark the file.

A page that randomly updates day to day is useless for me

Yep, it does that. I just have a bookmark to my "main" folder which is one level down so I can skip the "homepage".

The "Shared with me" section is just as bad, though (thankfully) it doesn't have recommendations (yet?)
