Eugene says that Mastodon may consider introducing citation toots, but in a way that allows people to opt out of being cited.

Quoting is already a thing on many fediverse platforms, but given the current mishmash of standards, it's going to be interesting to see what happens. If Mastodon's implementation is considered reasonable, we could see a standardisation around that method, but if it leaves something to be desired compared to the options that are already available, quote toots could get even less standardised.
