I never used any, what makes "tubi" special?

[-] YourMomsTrashman@lemmy.world 87 points 4 months ago

Heard someone else describe it as "They buy whatever movies they can get for cheap and as a result it is a goldmine for weird obscure stuff"

[-] alexiascylding 38 points 4 months ago

Yes exactly. Theres some good stuff on there if you dig. Watched the movie Cemetery Man on there.

Its only available in the US, Canada and UK but I just use a VPN

its free, it has ads but like so do some of the paid tiers of the other services, at least the whole experience is free. They dont have a huge selection but lots of interesting things there. its got all the old doctor who episodes on there

[-] alyth@lemmy.world 22 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Wait WHAT a service that has classic who?

Unfortunately, we're not currently available in your area.

Aw sad.

Edit: Oop you already mentioned that in the other comment.

[-] alexiascylding 11 points 4 months ago

Yeah. I just use a vpn to watch stuff there

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 5 points 4 months ago

Britbox has them for the US last I checked

[-] alyth@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

That's good to know! Tubi is in the US also. In my country (Germany) nobody streams Classic Who according to my sources. Personally I have the DVDs at home but it would be nice as an option.

free streaming service owned by FOX (not the disney one, the one that was formed out of the assets that disney didnt buy) that has a bunch of stuff on there, a lot of obscure stuff but also cool stuff like classic doctor who and farscape and old shows like everybody hates chris. idk i just like that its free and at times more convenient than pirating because i already always use a vpn

in May it was the most watched streaming service in the US, beating even Disney plus.

[-] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

When I'm looking for some obscure horror movie and can't find it, tubi usually pulls through. I enjoy it as well!

[-] aido@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I watched Babylon 5 on Tubi last year

[-] BreadOven@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

Also no ads using ublock. Minimal when not using one, and they let you know when they're coming.

[-] Wxnzxn@lemmy.ml 14 points 4 months ago

Sounds like they are in the phase of trying to get their share of the market before enshittification ensues, watch it while it's hot!

[-] BreadOven@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

I would say "don't say it or it will come true", but I don't believe in the saying, and we all know that's probably their plans already(what you said in your reply).

[-] SingularEye 46 points 4 months ago

no one stays. torrent everything.

[-] Excrubulent@slrpnk.net 18 points 4 months ago

I cannot describe how good it was when I first launched Stremio and discovered you could find virtually anything, from the extremely recent, still in cinemas, to old historical stuff. I just watched Furiosa, then rolled that into Fury Road, then went back and watched the original Mad Max franchise, all from the same interface. It was almost as easy as it would have been on a regular streaming service, and I never had any question in my mind that it would all be available.

[-] SsxChaos@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago

The only Real answer.

I had a friend who'd pay 1k in total for all the online avoidable subscriptions, reason it's "had" not have is sometimes stupid reaches an intolerable point of no return

[-] megopie 38 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

The fact that Tubi exists basically applies clown makeup to all the other streaming services. Like, Tubi shows me ads as or less frequently as the payed services and I don’t need to make an account to use it. That’s a huge plus for me personally as I’m tired of account bloat.

It doesn’t have every show or movie ever but no streaming services does. Its original shows are totally uninteresting to me, but that’s also true of 95% of new original shows on other streaming services. I ain’t about to shell out 8 dollars a month and sit through 10 minutes of ads every hour just to watch a couple of prestige shows.

And there are plenty of options for watching everything, for free, without ads, assuming you’re willing to jump through a couple hoops.

[-] loops@beehaw.org 3 points 4 months ago

How can installing software and downloading compatible file types be seen as jumping through hoops?

[-] megopie 7 points 4 months ago

It’s not hard, it just takes time and attention to set up properly. And a lot of people are scared of messing it up.

[-] saigot@lemmy.ca 23 points 4 months ago

Nice try tubi marketing team

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 4 months ago

Early 2023 they pushed so many ads at me.

What the fuck is a Tubi?

[-] bownage@beehaw.org 13 points 4 months ago
[-] AnarchoSnowPlow@midwest.social 20 points 4 months ago

Plex has been enshittifying hard the last few years. I recommend trying out jellyfin if you haven't in awhile.

[-] criitz@reddthat.com 4 points 4 months ago

Is love to switch to Jellyfin, but Plex has apps on all the devices I want and Jellyfin doesn't.

[-] TwiddleTwaddle 3 points 4 months ago

Which devices doesn't jellyfin have apps for? Seems like a pretty well developed ecosystem to me.

[-] criitz@reddthat.com 4 points 4 months ago

My TV is the main one. It has a native Plex app that works well, saving me from having to purchase some additional device. There's no Jellyfin app for it.

[-] bownage@beehaw.org 3 points 4 months ago

I'm sure it has, but my friends host their mediaservers there so I'll be wherever they are.

[-] veroxii@aussie.zone 4 points 4 months ago

Plex is too much work. Stremio with a RD account and you're done.

[-] itslilith 5 points 4 months ago

Happy to pay for Dropout and Nebula. Everything else can, kindly, fuck off~

[-] xploit@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I prefer Pluto over Tubi

If you're gonna have garbage to stream, might as well put on whatever random garbage at random time automatically so I don't waste time trying to decide on stuff I ultimately don't care about.

Plus you get some live news, though mostly rightwing crap depending on where you live and also you can stream some stuff on demand

Edit: having top gear, some comedy central stuff, southpark and csi channels for reruns is neat and they don't seem to care if you use VPN to watch US/UK/Canadian content (not sure where else it's available)

[-] Zkuld@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

at this point it sounds like television with extra steps

[-] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Pluto is like TV used to be. You turn on the TV and it's on the channel you last watched. There is no step 2.

If you want to scroll through endless categories looking for something specific to watch like a streaming service, it has that too.

But I frequently turn on the DS9 channel and leave it on all day despite having all the episodes on my Plex.

[-] xploit@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

That's exactly what it is, I've grown tired of streaming services, heaps of complete irrelevant content suggestions, so Pluto+torrents are much more convenient for random TV or stuff I actually want to watch and don't have to figure out which streaming service has it.

[-] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

That's extra work to filter out background right wing propaganda as a way to relax? Am I understanding the proposal?

[-] zyratoxx@lemm.ee 9 points 4 months ago
[-] Sabata11792@ani.social 12 points 4 months ago

I dropped Crunchyroll after they told me to turn off my ad blocker after I been paying for months, it was around the same time they got caught pushing views with bad translations. They lived long enough to be the villain.

[-] zyratoxx@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago

Ahh, shit. I haven't encountered that yet. I enjoy it while it lasts then 🫡

[-] Sabata11792@ani.social 4 points 4 months ago

It was years ago, shortly after they started operating legitimately. I think the drama was they washed out yuri implications from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and found other translations have been unfaithful enough to change plot elements.

[-] Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 months ago

Oh no. Is this a Pokémon donuts (onigiri) situation.

I have the same relationship with paramount+

... Only because I have a free trial for a few more months, then it's out the door with the rest

[-] KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 months ago

I have this relationship with HBO Max, but that's because I still get it free with my AT&T Fiber.

[-] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 4 points 4 months ago

don't understand the this free with no required login option is better comments. tubi, plex, pluto, roku, crackle, cw, whatever. heck even youtube sill allows no login access.

[-] 10_0@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 months ago

Prime stays for hazbin season 1 and 2

[-] megopie 3 points 4 months ago

See, this is kind of my opinion about streaming services, I ain’t gonna pay them anything unless they’re picking up independent projects I want supported.

I’m certainly not going to pay them for designed by corporate committee drivel that makes up 95% of original streaming content.
