My friends and I agree that boredom is the only appropriate response. We were over it within an hour

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 12 points 4 months ago

Holy shit this is fucking grim

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 40 points 4 months ago

It's just "don't feed the trolls" logic as applied to narcissistic politicians

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

I mean, you were right the first time. Trump is a troll in a man suit.

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago

Caring that a former politician was almost assassinated isn’t feeding the trolls. Being bored by the very reasonable deluge of coverage of a former president nearly being assassinated is absolutely grim as hell man. Assuming the poster is American take some fucking interest in your life.

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I hate to contradict you but I do take an interest in my life; this is why I emigrated from America, years ago.

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago

Same reason why I did last week. But I still think it’s important to care

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I care, but I think we're showing it in different ways.

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago

Being bored by political violence isn’t caring, sorry. Being bored by the rampant gun violence epidemic, being bored by the American death cult, these things are not caring.

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Do you not find it tedious to carry on like this? I have given explanations of my rationale, and your response has been to talk in circles.

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago

Disagreeing with you isn’t talking in circles. Your rationale is…you’re bored and you emigrated. Cool. That rationale is fucking grim, man.

You seem to think you’ve made some incredibly compelling argument, when all you’ve done is state what you are (bored) and where you are (not the US).

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Noooo. I will try again in good faith.

I just woke up a few seconds ago, but my rationale was that we should not entertain a click driven media circus around this event, because for one thing it's largely a case of self inflicted stochastic terrorism that is being incorporated into a horse race election by a media that wants nothing more than for this race to be as close as possible (if not outright favoring Trump). We gain nothing by letting this moment really shine for Trump, and we have everything to gain by moving on, hopefully back to talking about P45, the felonies, the countless lies, the several good things Biden has actually accomplished, etc. It would also please me deeply to have known that Trump had to deal with what he narcissistically experienced as the most heroic moment of his life, only to watch everyone collectively shrug.

I did not spell this all out in prior comments, for which I apologize. I can be self absorbed at times, and what is obvious to me is regrettably often not so to others. Please do not hold onto your previous surmise of me, I am just a grumpy jokey boy who is too fond of brevity.

All the forgoing is subject to hasty edits once I am upright and caffeinated.

Fair enough no hard feelings. The simple fact is we don’t know the motive. We assume but it could just as well be an obsessed fan (a la Selena) as a republican who thinks Trump isn’t extreme enough as a leftist who wants to take out a fascist. Those motives ascribe different responses. It’s also a little naive to think that you could just ignore an assassination attempt. I understand ignoring trumps day to day antics, but this is bigger than those.

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

It's worth noting that Teddy Roosevelt was able to more or less ignore a much better attempt, and even call for the assassin to not be harmed. Though I suppose more resilience is expected of progressives. 🙃

[-] originalfrozenbanana@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Donald Trump is no Teddy Roosevelt. Not a tenth of the leader. Teddy Roosevelt was a flawed man, but an incredible leader, and he ignored every inconvenience or barrier in his life. Being shot was like a cloudy day or a hill: just push through, it’s irrelevant.

And yes, like always progressives are held to a higher standard than fascists for everything…even assassination attempts

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

Nah, what's grim is that the bullet missed his brain. Granted, it's a tiny target, but still..

[-] UnityDevice@startrek.website 32 points 4 months ago

Shame he didn't have a scandal on that stage. They would have stopped taking about it within the day.

[-] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 40 points 4 months ago

To be fair, an assassination attempt like this hasn't happened within the lifetime of many Lemmyists. Trump has a scandal every other week.

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 20 points 4 months ago
[-] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 4 points 4 months ago

That doesn't quite have the same level of drama as a sniper on the rooftop though.

[-] deranger@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago

I dunno, that cobbled together Fallout 4 pipe gun was pretty wild.

[-] Bertuccio@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

And the 2016 assassination attempt on little known US presidential candidate Donald Trump...

[-] Excrubulent@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 months ago

Huh.

If I ever heard about that, I don't remember it. It really seems so mild in comparison to everything else.

Also, he didn't shoot at Trump, so it is different.

But it's true there hasn't been another credible attempt on a US president like this since Reagan.

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 4 months ago

Not on a US president maybe

[-] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 6 points 4 months ago

That is what I meant, yes.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 29 points 4 months ago

Yet you needed to make a meme to think it through

[-] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 67 points 4 months ago
[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

Yeah totally applies

[-] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 14 points 4 months ago

There's only so many ways to tell a very simple story.

[-] robocall@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

Let's go back to talking about how Biden's too old for a second term.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Or we can talk about that AND the fact that the world would have been a better place if Crooks had been a better shot 🤷

Except Biden isn't too old, he's too cognitively diminished. For example, Bernie is about a year older and showing no symptoms of cognitive decline.

Granted, Bernie was an elite cross country runner in his youth and still goes for a run every day, so that definitely helps..

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

All the Dems are freaking out over this, but its the only news item capable of dethroning "Biden Old!" headlines that were pummeling them since the debate.

[-] Excrubulent@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

It gives them some breathing room to strategise out of the spotlight, which might be what their comms blackout is really about - I don't believe it's truly out of respect for Trump, I mean come on. They're politicians and he's... Trump. That is of course assuming they're actually serious about winning, which they don't really seem to be if I'm honest.
