Damage to the image of the sport?! The one that constantly has people cheating and being stripped of their medals? Oh yeah, wouldn't want to ruin that!

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 118 points 4 months ago

Remember when they stripped Lance of his win, and they were going to award it to the next place finisher who didn't also cheat, but they didn't have one?

[-] rdyoung@lemmy.world 26 points 4 months ago

Pepperidge farm remembers.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 97 points 4 months ago

They have no imagination when it comes to cheating in the Tour de France these days. Now, it's all performance enhancing drugs. But back in the good old days-

“They would trail a thin piece of wire right behind a motor car, which, at one end, had a cork fixed on to the end of it,” Cossins explains. “And the rider would wedge the cork between his teeth. And then get towed along with this thing, this wire, pulling him along.”

There was a cool hightech one where they hid an invisible motor inside the frame of the bike. It could not move the bike by itself but it added a few watts that gave a clear advantage. https://road.cc/content/news/uci-warns-it-impossible-use-motors-tour-de-france-309061

"How do you beat a man on drugs if you are not on drugs"

And apparently here is an answer.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

"And this year's prize for the best pharmacist goes to..."

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 154 points 4 months ago

The fool. It's the Tour de France.

He was supposed to kiss his mistress.

[-] xav@programming.dev 2 points 4 months ago

I'm French and found this comment offensive. Then I upvoted you.

[-] celeste 99 points 4 months ago

Finally they're treating opposite gender couples the same as same gender couples! Soon we will be able to ban love entirely for it's inapropiateness! /s

[-] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Who downvoted this fantastic dialectical comment? Shame . Btw, his wife is now pregnant from the kiss 💋

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 28 points 4 months ago

He was that night, am I right guys?

How dare you promote love during a race you shameless piece of shit. The bicycling community will not recover from this for decades.

[-] englislanguage@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 4 months ago

Capitalist perfection: you are paid for cycling, don't do anything else!

[-] AlpacaChariot@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

You'd think they would be cool with kissing, seeing as they are all wearing Lycra already...

[-] Clent@lemmy.world 50 points 4 months ago

They need to fine the finer for the same thing.

[-] cmrn@lemmy.world 18 points 4 months ago

Yeah I saw them kissing the guy’s wife too

[-] Blackout@kbin.run 47 points 4 months ago

Cycling is a famously gay sport with men in super tight clothing trying to impress other men. Next time kiss a dude

[-] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 40 points 4 months ago

His wife might have had a performance enhancing drug on her tongue

[-] Noodle07@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

It's called love and it makes people go mad

[-] charade_you_are@lemmy.ca 36 points 4 months ago

Isn't fining a person for a quick kiss a way worse look for the governing body than the actual kiss? Not that the fools running cycling would ever be able to come up with that thought on their own.

[-] HejMedDig@feddit.dk 26 points 4 months ago

Team No Fun strikes again!

I think the fine is for stopping during a TT, which clearly shows he is not actively racing. Regardless though, he and his local cheering squad did more positive for the sport than UCI ever will accomplish

[-] JayleneSlide@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago

The UCI could fuck up a wet dream. They actively harm the advancement of bicycling. Whenever the UCI starts administering a race type, that whole industry sector is permafuct. Disc brakes (regardless of how one might feel about discs) were banned for many years, resulting in delay of that technology despite the demand being there. Recumbents are a superlative bicycle design for most humans, but thanks UCI ban.

One of the main reasons gravel bikes have innovated so quickly is because the UCI has yet to stick its stupid nose into the races. But they'll be along shortly to ruin the fun.

[-] Fuzzy_Red_Panda@lemm.ee 9 points 4 months ago

The UCI is also transphobic and doesn't let trans women compete with cis women.

[-] ZealousSealion@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 4 months ago

The UCI's stance on trans women is not transphobic. In line with other sporting federations, they have found that going through male puberty gives a person who transition afterwards an advantage over cis women. So, they have decided to have prioritise the fairness of competition. There are plenty of valid reasons for criticising the UCI, but this is not one.

[-] Fuzzy_Red_Panda@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

they have found that going through male puberty gives a person who transition afterwards an advantage over cis women

Did they also find that short women have an advantage over tall women? How about lighter women having an advantage over heavier women? How about women having an advantage for having more muscle mass? How about people with androgen insensitivity syndrome? Or XX male syndrome? Intersex people?

My point is people will always have advantages somewhere (and there's no clean place to draw the line); no two people are built the same, which means you absolutely can have -- and do have -- trans women (who went through a male puberty) with no advantage over cis women. The UCI won't even allow those women on a case-by-case basis, which is absolutely 100% transphobic.

An actual solution is to divide racers up by skill class and stop gender segregating sports, and to stop caring so much about who wins, but that will never happen as long as money is involved.

Everyone cries about "fairness to women" and "fairness in women's sports" when what they mean is "keeping sports exclusively for cis women"; trans women are women, but almost no one cares about fairness for them.

UCI takes a classic approach to racing so that the bikes don't become the story, and that's ok. Recumbents are weird, and nobody is stopping you or anyone else from creating a recumbent league. There has already been a gravel UCI WC since 2022 as well. Disc brakes weren't universally praised immediately either - it took years for the pieces the fall into place, like carbon rims, wider tires, through axles, etc. and now everyone uses them. I really fail to see the harm here over "slow" adoption. You can't please everyone.

[-] HejMedDig@feddit.dk 3 points 4 months ago

I would love to see the restrictions on frame design removed. I want more Lotus 108s and Cervelo P5Xs A recumbent racing league would be awesome, both fared and non-faring

[-] JayleneSlide@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

A recumbent racing league would be awesome, both fared and non-faring

Oooooh! I'd watch this. Hell, I'd probably get back into racing. And I don't even like recumbents that much (but still think they are the superlative design for most people). Without the UCI interference, we'd see some crazy cool stuff. I feel like the best we can get right now are the recumbent speed/distance records.

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 25 points 4 months ago

They fined him in Francs? WTF?

[-] HejMedDig@feddit.dk 14 points 4 months ago

UCI is located in Switzerland, so fines to rides are always denominated in Francs

[-] dhork@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

I guess the Tour De France likes their Swiss money

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Not the French one lol

[-] MolochAlter@lemmy.world 19 points 4 months ago

A proper frenchman would never kiss his wife, only his mistresses!

[-] fubarx@lemmy.ml 17 points 4 months ago

And in one response, he reinforces the stereotype of French men as romantics and makes all the rest of us look like slackers.

Bravo!

[-] SomeGuy69@lemmy.world 17 points 4 months ago

I would never pay this fine. How can they even enforce this?

[-] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 30 points 4 months ago

By barring you from future races?

[-] GiddyGap@lemm.ee 14 points 4 months ago

Withhold from team winnings.

[-] 2484345508@lemy.lol 8 points 4 months ago

Ask them if you can make payments on it. $1 checks by mail.

[-] englislanguage@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 4 months ago

Maybe they should ban trowing away your trash instead.

[-] androogee@midwest.social 12 points 4 months ago

Damn dude

His wife is fine

[-] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 11 points 4 months ago
[-] ASeriesOfPoorChoices@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

or was it an Australian kiss? (that's the same thing as a French kiss, but... down under.)

[-] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 3 points 4 months ago

Well now I'm using this. Bless you.

[-] sirico@feddit.uk 7 points 4 months ago

Uci the bane of cycling even worse are the judgemental cos players who think their rules apply to everyday cyclists.

[-] Draedron@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 months ago
