Fanaticus.social is here already but there’s definitely plenty of fragmentation overall. There’s probably more than I realize because I’m still figuring this place out.
Ah, very cool! I haven't found a great way to discover new servers, so I hadn't heard of this before.
This is very similar to what I was picturing - a server which only allows sports-related communities to be made.
Thanks for sharing, I'm going to start using the communities from that server and promoting it around where I can.
It looks like it's just clubs and baseball. What about some subs for general sport. Like /c/badminton
It’s still being fleshed out and growing each day. I’d definitely support a general sport community there as well.
Like wrestling? :P
How’d you guess? :-)
I was on my inbox screen, apparently it just updates the comment right away on my screen, if you edit it.
Come on over! Everyone's free to start their own community!
Can I create a community without being on the instance?
Oh. Good question. I don't think so. Which one would you like me to create? Wrestling? Can I make you a mod?
Badminton👀
!badminton@fanaticus.social enjoy! Let me know if you'd like to be a mod.
Great icon! Yes, please :)
I can't offer advice, but I do support this idea! Consolidate the sports!
I can't offer much help unfortunately, but I love this idea. That was one of the main draws to Reddit for me. Chatting it up in GameDay threads was a blast.
We've got game day threads at fanaticus! I forked the popular bot from reddit and made it compatible with lemmy.
It sounds like a good idea in theory, but consolidating all communities on one instance might lead to some shenanigans down the road. If one group of fans go around and causes the instance to be defederated than all the communities will be blocked.
Also let's say as an example the NFL or MLB does not like what is going on in the instance, they could go after the mods. Example on Reddit was r/NFLstreams was taken down.
I would think it would be beneficial to have league communities and team communities spread out amongst different instances which would make it harder for leagues and teams to interfere with them.
I think you’re on to something here, and would be willing to help support where I can. My guess is that my tech acumen is far behind most others here. But feel free to include me if you decide to dive deeper.
Literally the only thing I miss about Reddit is Padres gameday threads and NLBest
I will spend the vast majority of my time on whatever instance has the largest mlb and nfl communities
