If we get to a point where adds can no longer be reliably blocked I'll quit YouTube. Life is too short to be wasted on adds.

[-] coffinwood@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 6 months ago

That's the point. You cost them money, because streaming is really expensive and skipping or blocking ads doesn't make money.

The moment I was presented with an ad-blocker notification by YouTube, I subscribed to Premium. I won't watch ads. If it gets too expensive I'll quit.

True, we can't let the trillionaires miss out on revenue streams. Super yachts don't pay for themselves, plus shareholders have bills too.

I apologise for my rude comment. Have a nice day.

I get your point, we need to tax these assholes to hell and back. Wealth inequality is one of the biggest global social issues of the time.

But that does not change that YouTube is barely profitable, and will be eventually shut down if it's not at least somewhat financially viable. It's a private endeavor. That's just how that works. If we want that service to stick around, someone will have to pay for it. I'm open to suggestions of funding a public alternative, but YouTube as a business needs funding, whether we like it or not.

Ever get a sore tongue from all that bootlicking bud?

It's a service / product I value at a certain amount. That sounds like a bad thing?

[-] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago

In many ways, yes absolutely. By being a mindless consumer "just buying a product", you leave it up to the balancing of the economy to determine if that is a wise decision or not.

Last I checked, giving a rich person even more money is always a stupid move.

[-] coffinwood@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 6 months ago

I'm not a mindless consumer (aka sheeple) for making a decision someone else doesn't approve of.

The alternatives to YouTube Premium are

  • Ads: won't happen

  • Ad-Block: won't work (anymore)

  • no YouTube: there are no great free or cheaper alternatives

[-] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

"I'm not a mindless consumer! I just said I'll pay for something I don't have to, to a corporation that doesn't need the money, that's all!"

[-] coffinwood@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 6 months ago

Where do I get the same content where the creators get paid too?

I can currently choose between other paid services or systems that circumvent any gratification for the artists.

[-] BigFatNips@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 months ago

Patreon, Odyssey, substack. I'm sure there's more, tbh

[-] coffinwood@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 6 months ago

I've never used Patreon so maybe I don't get it right but:

Not every Youtube channel has a Patreon, and even then I'd have to pledge every single one that does which would ruin me.

[-] DougHolland@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

The end of YouTube would not be a terrible outcome. Instead of a worldwide monopoly on DIY video, new and perhaps less evil options would have a chance.

[-] TDCN@feddit.dk 3 points 6 months ago

There are many other ways of making money for someone like me. Make good merch. Make an actually good platform i would like to invest in instead of the garbage platform its becoming. Make it possible to pay directly to channels i watch (and take a small cut) make the platform more open so people can contribute to the function of the playform with great addons and optimizations. Make adds that are not intrusive to the content. Make the creators actually control the adds so it's up to the creators when, where, what and how much adds should be shown (like in the old days) ... I could continue, but I do not have any sympathy for a monopoly platform that YouTube has become.

Let’s be honest, and this is not just YouTube, but if everyone (from viewers to creators) would just stop using these corporate services, then this wouldn’t be a problem. Go on strike for a few weeks. Find some other non-corporate related service (like peertube).

I get it. A lot of people are deeply entrenched in YouTube. And if that’s going to remain the case, then embrace it. Make it your mantra. Quit bitching about enshittification. Because until everybody stands up and says No collectively, this shit will keep happening and only get worse with each iteration.

We got complacent when we cut the cord with cable. We thought we finally cut the head off the beast. But like any good hydra, it grew two more. And now what? We give up? Fuck that. Stand up and tell them to fuck right off.

Or don’t. Those shiny metal(?) plaques that YouTube gives out sure are pretty.

The hardest steps are the first few ones. Same thing with Lemmy. I was really hesitant to join on here because there weren't many people. But now that I'm on the wagon I absolutely love it and I'm glad to be a part of a community that's generating quality content. So thanks to all the lurkers, voters, commenters, posters on the fediverse, you are helping us all as a whole.

I hope peertube will be similar to this as well. We get the privacy individuals, tech individuals, the rest might come trickling down.
