ROM scene. Where? (lemmings.world)
submitted 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) by Benjamin@lemmings.world to c/android@lemmy.world

It's been a while since I was into unlocking and ROMing my devices, but I've got the itch again.

XDA used to be a good place, but... I hope I'm out of there loop or something, because it's almost a ghost town compared to years ago.

I've got us carrier unlocked devices; OnePlus N10 and N20, Moto G7Power.

Definitely not as big as it used to be. Lineage, Graphene, and Pixel Experience are just about the only players left. Graphene doesn't officially support anything other than pixels actively supported by Google though.

[-] 3aqn5k6ryk@lemmy.world 15 points 6 months ago

Pixel Experience is dead btw.

[-] alphapuggle@programming.dev 8 points 6 months ago

Wow, super missed that. April 10th. I just had it on a Pixel 2xl not too long ago

[-] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 10 points 6 months ago

I'd add DivestOS, a fork of Lineage

[-] catloaf@lemm.ee 15 points 6 months ago

It's still XDA.

[-] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 14 points 6 months ago

GSI are dominant now, device specific Roms are rare these days.

“Generic system images”

Since device manufacturers don’t support their hardware, Google has tried adding another layer of abstraction between hardware and the Android UI

[-] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 6 points 6 months ago

Really?

I haven't seen any third party GSIs. What have you seen (that I clearly lack the google-fu to find, lol)?

Oh cool, thanks!

I have a couple devices on that list, may have to experiment a bit.

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

I see my N10 there 👍

Finally something to play with! Tyvm

[-] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Even if your device is not listed, it is still supported. Every phone launched with Android 8 or greater support project treble. Thus, it also supports gsi.

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

I've not been able to get the built in gsi loader to ever work, not even with an app.

From what I understand, 1+ is not doing something the expected way... Idk.

I still need to find TWRP and to backup stock partitions first.

  1. DSU works properly for Android 12 or greater.
  2. If fastboot works you don't need twrp.
[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

DSU, do you have a OnePlus N10 or N20? It does not work. If it works on your OnePlus, please provide the extra/special steps you took other than tapping the app and selecting a gsi, then rebooting. Nothing happens on boot. No gsi. Just boots normally.

[-] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Both N10 and N20 do not support DSU because they launched with the Android version less than Android 12. But you can still install GSI with the traditional method. Check you VNDk version with this app and I can tell you which gsi's are supported by your device.

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

I'll get back to you. Busy atm, but definitely want to sort this out.

  • Android 14 QPR2 will cause problems
  • Try this one.
  • Make a Backup of your data
  • Unlock Bootloader (if you haven't already)
  • Reboot to bootloader
  • fastboot flash system gsi.img
[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

Is it really that simple? I haven't ROMd in 5yrs/since A/B partitioning.

GApps incl?

[-] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Yes, you will have bugs. But those are fixable with toggles in the TrebleApp. And Gapps are included.

[-] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 1 points 6 months ago

Last time I checked GSI's kinda sucked and had worse performance than native ROMs, is that still true? (Keep in mind this was 3 or 4 years ago)

[-] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

No, it's not at least in my case. Actually GSI Lineage is a little bit faster due to less bloat than stock. But performance could be different for different devices.

Note: I experienced some bugs but all of them were easy to fix.

[-] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 1 points 6 months ago

Awesome, what phone are you using?

[-] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago
[-] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 1 points 6 months ago

Never heard of that one, but great that you can get GSI's working on it smoothly

[-] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Yeah, it's an Asian brand. That's why you have never heard of it.

[-] clot27@lemm.ee 12 points 6 months ago

Craze of custom rom is almost over now due to manufacturers bullshit

[-] kalpol@lemm.ee 5 points 6 months ago

Wasn't a craze, it was an attempt to make the devices usable in most cases.

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

Raises hand in cheap but very usable hardware that only gets one major update

[-] ser@lemm.ee 8 points 6 months ago

Many of them are on Telegram. Try looking for the groups by device name.

[-] sleeperdouge@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 months ago

I have two Xiaomi devices and use custom roms for both of them. While there are pages for them in the XDA forums, most of the new updates and developments of custom roms and kernels, at least for Xiaomi devices, happens within telegram groups.

[-] aerxi@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

To me it seems to be a bit more active than it used to be. Even my unpopular ultra budget Redmi from 4 years ago got a couple of A14 roms this year.

[-] cyrus@wetdry.world 0 points 6 months ago

@Benjamin Telegram. They all moved to fucking telegram.

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

Which is ridiculous. Can't audit code.

Easy way to get accounts stolen, too.

[-] cyrus@wetdry.world 1 points 6 months ago

@Benjamin oh there are other reasons not to use it

(full disclosure: that is my document, I maintain and update it)

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

My isp blocked that link. Never saw it. 🤷‍♂️

[-] cyrus@wetdry.world 0 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

@Benjamin the wha-

okay here's an unshortened one

I usually share the shortened one because cryptpad links tend to be large

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

Oh man... Why... Arg

I do actually have an account there. How could I go about completely removing it?

And I need to look into Matrix... Totally clueless.

While you were typing this, I found another post by another user to the same document.

[-] cyrus@wetdry.world 1 points 6 months ago

@Benjamin account removal can be done on https://my.telegram.org if I recall right.

Also...someone OTHER THAN ME linked this? That's rare

Matrix is currently in a bit of a weird place as funding is low. Its alright, but dont expect Telegram-level UX. Element is also re-making their mobile apps as part of Element X.

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

👀

Mastodon isn't Lemmy, is it? 🤦‍♂️

I found a link to a mastodon thread... And upon much closer inspection, I do believe that's you over there, too.

I'm apparently very ignorant on this. Lemmy... Mastodon... Matrix...

[-] cyrus@wetdry.world 1 points 6 months ago

@Benjamin they're all connected :)

I'm writing to you from mastodon (hence all my replies start by pinging you)

Lemmy does format some things in lemmy-specific ways, but other than that all our posts can be viewed anywhere, and I can slap any lemmy thread into my mastodon UI to reply to whoever I want

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Are you serious? 😳🤦‍♂️😓

I was on Mastodon originally, but the app I was beta testing was a Lemmy client, so I made a new account (my Mastodon creds didn't work)

Methinks I should find a new app. Arg.

[-] cyrus@wetdry.world 0 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

@Benjamin

No I am not saying accounts are portable, but the content is. Your mastodon app has no idea how to handle Lemmy, and your Lemmy app has no idea how to handle Mastodon

BUT the servers that you're signing up to? They know how to share the content between eachother. That is because they all use the ActivityPub standard to exchange posts and account data.

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

So Lemmy and Mastodon connect to the same content, but different log in servers?

Do I need to do anything to see those other people?

Oh boy, I've got a lot to learn.

[-] cyrus@wetdry.world 1 points 6 months ago

@Benjamin its basically automatic e-mail in the sense that it doesn't matter what e-mail provider you're on but you can still contact each other across mail providers

Here you can substitute mail providers with social media platforms, and it happens ✨automagically✨, without anyone doing anything

To put this into perspective, I see hundreds of posts that aren't by people that signed up on wetdry.world on my home feed, and I can still interact with them, yet wetdry.world is my home.

Maybe the little explanation video on https://fediverse.info helps

[-] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago

Email. That helped immensely.

Gmail can mail Yahoo, but Yahoo can't directly see my Gmail account name, unless we directly interact first.

I think that sums it up.

So I can use either "CLIENT" to communicate across the Fediverse, but my credentials only work on the server I created them at.

I think I got it. I'm watch the link later👍
