Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So how’s it going?

Yeah good mate, hope y'all are doing well

[-] sortofblue@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 year ago

Your flowers look much better than mine! I don't think mine appreciated the lawn mower treatment the last month or so, haha

[-] chrizbie@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 year ago

Oh it's not mine, I mow grass for the council and I just saw this yesterday and thought it was interesting that it's out this early

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

I saw some near a playground a week ago, I thought the same thing!

Trying out a new keyboard on my phone and getting everything completely wrong, it feels like my thumbs are two sizes too big. Not sure if it's worth it but the swipe thing is meant to be pretty good so we'll see.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Oh man I once tried out a new phone keyboard. It wasn't that great but it has a swipe to delete function (the backspace lets you swipe to delete multiple characters). After getting that feature I can't go back, and I haven't found a decent keyboard that has that feature.

I'm trying SwiftKey, which has bings AI fixing all my mistakes. Guess I'll be doing my bit to dumb down the engine behind it, haha.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago

I used to use SwiftKey way back before they were bought by Microsoft. I just downloaded it again and noticed they have swipe to delete! Not quite the same as I'm used to, but will give this a go for a bit and see if I can get used to it. Thanks for the suggestion!

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago

It stopped working! Swipe to delete and swipe to move cursor don't work. I don't think this is gonna work out.

[-] sortofblue@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

I'm having trouble with the space bar but I don't know if its glitchy or if the user is the issue. I like messing with different software just for a change of scenery though so will see. So far the AI is getting all my errors fixed correctly so I haven't had to delete much yet.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago

I'm not deleting errors, I'm just half writing posts then deciding I want to say something different and trying to easily and accurately delete the previous sentence or two.

[-] sortofblue@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

The standard second guessing! I do that on desktop a lot. Writing on a phone has never been my thing though so I usually talk myself out of posting before I even start

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I can understand that. I try to keep longform stuff to the PC because it's too easy to mess it up and lose all your work on mobile.

No motivation at work, send help.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 year ago

Sorry, got none to spare at the moment.

[-] chrizbie@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Mate I think I know the answer already but do you host lemmy.nz yourself?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

It depends what you mean by "yourself". I'm responsible for all the technical stuff, but the actual physical server is in a datacentre in Auckland. It runs multiple websites, it's run by fediservices.nz who I'm not associated with but I was offered space on their server to host the site when we were outgrowing the existing server.

However, if something is broken, in most cases I'm the one who fixes it.

[-] chrizbie@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 year ago

That's pretty gnarly mate, if there's anything I can contribute let me know, I'm really enjoying this Lemmy stuff and I think it's amazing that we have this little digital community

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Just hang out and help keep this place friendly!

Everything seems to be ticking along OK now, though I occasionally seek help from people in the Matrix chat room if you wanted to join: https://lemmy.nz/post/169187

We have chats about all sorts in there, sometimes technical, sometimes about community, and sometimes just chatting.

There’s a motivation shortage currently, sorry :(

[-] NoRamyunForYou@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 year ago

Going in for the final pre-settlement inspection today. Though as the Chattels were listed in an "As Is" Condition (which we knew prior to signing), I guess there's not much to check other than to see if anything catastrophic has happened

[-] sortofblue@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Connect ate my comment, I think. I was going to suggest taking an electrical doodad so you can check all the power sockets; we took a shaver to our final inspection.

[-] NoRamyunForYou@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Ahh yes good idea :)

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

I guess you've got to check they didn't take the house with them when moving out?

[-] NoRamyunForYou@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

It would make for a good story though 😂

[-] eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

I placed an order over the weekend, but still hadn’t received a dispatch email by 5pm yesterday. I sent them an email last night and what do you know I get a tracking link email this morning at 5am. Am I being impatient or is three days to dispatch an order slow?

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It's not unusual, but depending what it is it may be slower than nornal. If you ordered over the weekend I'd count it as if you'd ordered on Monday. Dispatch on Wednesday isn't particularly bad, but any later would be annoying as you might not get it by the weekend.

But of course it depends on their shipping estimates too. If it was Mighty Ape I'd be annoyed.

[-] eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah that’s how I view it, shipped on Monday should be possible and ideal, but Tuesday seems reasonable at the latest. But I did find it weird getting a tracking number so early in the morning. It was from TradeTested so I paid $30+ for shipping, I would say it’ll come in a medium flat pack box. Crossing my fingers to get it before weekend.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, a bigger site I'd expect to be shipping in 24 hours. It may have been special, just coming out of a long weekend they may have had more orders to get through on Monday than normal so it may have taken longer.
