To be fair as someone from Louisiana.... All of you should be banned from making food

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 44 points 11 months ago

Don’t even pretend like y’all don’t have some weird shit on your menus.

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 37 points 11 months ago

Cheesecake is a bit of a misnomer. It's more like an etouffee in a crust.

Congratulations, this is the funniest comment I've seen on Lemmy so far

[-] awnery@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

so, our business model failed when the german guy died and stopped sneezing into the bread. he had some unique gross weird boogers.

Now, I have stolen this Federation starship to seek out new yeast!

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Oh that’s just one example. Pass denied.

edit: feel free to point out weird food from here, I probably will agree.

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

You want the really weird I can give you that to, down here we eat nutria. Basically water rats. I have no problem insulting our cuisine, but as a green ball once said " if you are going to insult me do it properly"

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Hey, I didn’t name it cheesecake, the restaurant in New Orleans did.

[-] clayh@lemmy.ml 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Because tourists from the Midwest can’t pronounce etouffee

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Tourists cannot pronounce most of the street names here and we’re fine with it. Make tourists learn new vocabulary, or at least believe they’re visiting a different country or something. If you call it cheesecake, expect them to think of it as cheesecake.

[-] clayh@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 months ago

Thanks, Poindexter. I’m not the guy that named it though.

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 3 points 11 months ago

Me neither, so anyone saying I should insult them correctly when someone local to NOLA named it cheesecake needs to reevaluate something.

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

New Orleans is the only city in Louisiana, got it.

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 4 points 11 months ago

The restaurant the photo is from is in New Orleans. That’s the entire basis of the statement. Got that?

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Yes but you are saying that Louisiana cuisine only comes from NOLA and claimed I was a NOLA resident both of which are wrong.

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

saying that Louisiana cuisine only comes from NOLA

No, I absolutely did not.

You offered a quote that said that if I was going to insult you, to do it properly, implying offense to it being called cheesecake.

You can go read my reply that says “Hey, I didn’t name it cheesecake, the restaurant in New Orleans did.” Meaning that you were evidently being insulted by a restaurant in NOLA, and not me, because I didn’t name the dish in the photo.

That’s it. That’s all that applies to you.

Next guy tells me it’s apparently named cheesecake because the real name is too hard for tourists to say, and in a manner I replied that it would be better to call it what is, because if something (still referring to this one dish in the photo here, not all of LA cuisine, or where it’s called elsewhere) is being called cheesecake by a place, expect people to think of it as cheesecake. And that I also did not name it cheesecake, so the whole “insulting” thing may need to be reevaluated since it came from someone in NOLA and not me, state foreigner.

That’s it. Still no commentary about LA cuisine as a whole only coming from NOLA. I have no idea where you got that. Just talking about this one dish from this one restaurant and the repercussions of them naming this thing cheesecake instead of what it actually is, and this is all connected to that quote regarding insulting someone properly, and the fact that it’s coming from a local there, not from me.

That’s it. Nothing but that. Please point to where I’m saying all your food comes from New Orleans.

edit: also, please point to where I say you are a NOLA resident. I’ve only gone along with your own claim of being a Louisiana resident.

[-] clayh@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

Goddamn you just love to be a shithead don’t you

[-] mateomaui@reddthat.com 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

He apparently needed an explanation so I very clearly put it to rest. You’re also free to point out to me where I said what he claimed. Go ahead. I still don’t understand how I could possibly be talking about all Louisiana food in any capacity when I literally was talking about one dish from one restaurant and I kept referring to that one place. If you’re going to start whining and snarking at me with accusatory nonsense, I’m going to set you straight.

And that includes you.

Also, I didn’t resort to any name calling anywhere in this thread, including that explanation, yet you have twice because apparently you have no intelligence response past the first one, which barely qualified. So I’m not the shithead here, you are.

That’s the smartest thing you’ve said.

[-] clayh@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

Gotta have the last word huh? 🤣

[-] Artyom@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago

Whatever that is, I'd eat it.

[-] protist@mander.xyz 16 points 11 months ago

I'm from Louisiana/Texas with family in the Midwest. When we'd visit for the holidays, it was some disgusting shit. Green, opaque jello molds with random foods suspended in it, pickles and cream cheese on toothpicks, and random "salads" like the ones above. My mom (from the south) made macaroni and cheese casserole one year up there and everyone was floored

[-] JaymesRS@literature.cafe 5 points 11 months ago

Were the pickles with cream cheese wrapped in ham or some other deli meat? Because those are delicious.

[-] protist@mander.xyz 8 points 11 months ago

I'm not going to lie, yes they are, but they're not Thanksgiving food, dammit!

[-] JaymesRS@literature.cafe 4 points 11 months ago

😀

Those are delicious anytime snacks, I’ll have you know. (Seriously, I make them once a month or so. Great low cal snack)

[-] TheMauveAvenger@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago

I love Cajun food, but all of the dishes pretty much taste the same with different textures. Let's not pretend like Louisiana is the mecca of cooking here.

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

I don't mean to but compared to the image above, food in Louisiana looks like a Gordon Ramsey dish

[-] Zorque@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago

Was "All of you" not directed at "all of us", then, and instead directed only at the people making the abomination casseroles instead?

You should be more specific in your language next time.

[-] zepheriths@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

All of you means everyone that makes that "dish". Clear enough?
