Problem with using chains like this as meme templates is it wastes a lot of time by making people read through the chronologically previous entries to make sure the creator used the same "tree" everyone else is.
They just don't scale very well. So, more people are just going to dump their contributions in the comments than usual, instead of bothering to make an image version.
They just don't work as well, which imo, is why they're fairly rare despite being often pretty funny and good.
One of the things Tumblr did better than everyone else. It's chained reblogs don't resize the original post and you can watch the chain in chronological order. You could've seen it in screencaps made there. Sometimes it leads to really cool random collabs.
