It's funny they have an animal as a national pride that they are not even trying to protect.
Unfortunately this sort of thing is not uncommon. Even in China, the national animal is the Panda, and they are becoming endangered too, despite efforts to protect them.
Didn't china save the panda? I heard they left the critically endangered category a few years ago

Yes, they are still very endangered but the numbers grown steadily over the years and if such efforts continue, they will be saved.
