Also, the US had to reverse engineer some of their own nuclear weapons because the people who built them all died and the knowledge of how they were built died with them.

Tbf, the main reason behind that one was classification. Nobody without need to know was told, and it wasn't just written down somewhere so it couldn't be leaked.
