If you've been dependent on alcohol for a while, your central nervous system will have adjusted to it.
Once you stop, the CNS goes a bit nuts because it's used to alcohol sedating it. That's why some people die from withdrawal, and also a key reason for anxiety while quitting.
It'll get better, but it takes time. It can be very helpful to find healthy alternatives. Exercise is fan fucking tastic for this, even if it's just a 15 minute walk. Cutting out stimulants like caffeine may also help, I'm not as sure about that.
