I actually hate this. Like, I really hate the Gorn rework.
I don't understand why they did it.
Yeah because the gorn was so well represented before now. What is this take, would you preferred to if they'd stayed with the crap guy in a foam costume idea?
I would have preferred the Gorn were never spoken of again instead of this weird thing that makes the TOS episode even more inexplicable.
They could have called this race they made up anything, there was no reason to relate them to the Gorn.
I actually disagree. One of the things that annoys me most about Nue Trek is their tendency to just introduce a monster of the week and then forget about it.
The Gorn are an established species within the lore, but are not very well explored and there aren't many stories about them. But what we do know about them is this; they are supposed to be dangerous, they are supposed to be hyper aggressive, and they are supposed to be eating people, nothing about their new depiction changes any of the fundamental properties of the species. It's far less egregious the redesigning of Klingons for example.
In other words I feel like the Gorn are faithful to cannon, and would probably have been depicted the way they are currently depicted had the budget and technology existed to do so back in TOS era.
They don't care about the canon in the slightest. That has been proven again and again.
The only reason they use the same names is because people will recognize the name which will increase the chances of more sales. Just as reworking the Gorn to be completely different was about increasing sales.
Its all about the demographics and maximizing sales by bringing in fans who didn't like the original Star Trek.
Roddenberry's dream died a long time ago, I'm just glad he's not around to have to see it.
Nonsense. Changing canon is not an inherently good or bad thing. Sometimes it even needs to be done. It can be done well, like when TOS Klingons were overhauled and replaced with movie/TNG Klingons. And it can be done poorly, like when TNG Klingons were overhauled and replaced with Kelvin Klingons.
The SNW version of the Gorn is a vast improvement over TOS Gorn, and is a logical progression from the changes introduced by the ENT Gorn.
What are you talking about the Gorn of supposed to be dangerous according to canon. TOS just had a tiny budget and couldn't think of anything cleverer than a guy in a suit.
To make a good and entertaining show, and because the Gorn were a cool concept that wasn't especially threatening in 1967 let alone 2026.
I also feel like they wanted to experiment with aliens being more alien. It's been a problem that Star Trek's original aliens aren't that alien.
There were some that were decently creative.
