Surprising that anti-Peta sentiment is so prevalent here on Lemmy, kind of thought that would be left behind at Reddit. Aside from their deliberately abrasive marketing and the misinformation about them kidnapping people's pets to euthanize them, what did they do?

While animal activism is a good thing, PETA has a unique "the ends justify the means approach" that gives other activists a bad name. Historically they were famous for extreme publicity stunts to raise awareness for animals who can't advocate for themselves, but in recent years function more as a lobbyists interweaving animal protectionism with various unrelated issues. These lobbying efforts are contributing to the erosion and brain drain of American academic science among other important issues.

Full disclosure, I'm biased and affiliated with a non-profit trying to save academic research in Oregon. PETA has been the largest source of misinformation, using a huge amount of money to establish billboard campaigns, targeted ads, and misleading polls to paint the research center as villainous. Everyone wants to protect animals but the nuance of protecting life saving research dependant on animal models is a much harder position to argue than "save the animals".

Research is slowly drifting away from animal testing, but today many scientific breakthroughs (some concrete examples currently under threat include a cure for HIV, GLP1S, Non-hormonal birth control) rely on animals and non-animal alternatives haven't yet caught up in capability.

They pointed out that smug carnist bros are actually terrible people. They will never be forgiven in these sorts of spaces.

They say it's because "PETA is crazy!" or some other non-statement like they don't turn around and bitch about vegans as a whole.

People don't hate them because they're "annoying" or "crazy." They hate them because they're right. No one wants to be confronted by their Jungian shadow.

PETA would be more respected if they weren't so batshit crazy. Their is literally no line that they wouldn't cross just for free publicity. They are just as bad as religion when it comes to rampant proselytizing.

"They kill animals!"

That's overwhelmingly the critique people have of PETA. They humanely euthanize instead of just letting animals starve on the streets. Not one viable alternative has been proposed here beyond "let other shelters try to adopt them" like there are shelters turning animals away for the sake of turning them away and not because they literally don't have the capacity to do anything.

That's why the overwhelming majority of these complaints are just vague innuendo about PETA doing "cruelty," whatever that means exactly.
