So despite all the controversy about LTT. If we can put that aside for a moment. I do think this is in general good advertising for Linux. LTT does have a very large audience. And a lot of "normie" users that watch as well. He's Linux choices and info could defiantly use some improvements though.

If I didn't know anything about Linux, and had Linus Tech Tips as my main source of knowledge in regards to Linux, I would have considered Linux to be a toy novelty project at best.

Linus Tech Tips should focus on what they're good at, which is, err... Well. I bet they're good at something. Perhaps making noodles or something?

Except the part where they are happy to slander all and any Linux distros because they are too stupid to rtfm.

The only reason they are speaking of steamOS now is bevcause thats the current trend. The same way when Mint was the trend. The same way when zorin... Garuda... You get it.

the only thing i don't get is why they were speaking about popOS so much? is popOS really that big of a distro?

[-] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Nope.

The only reason is that they have a download for nvidia button on the first page.

And if you don't have the motivation to search „distro xy nvidia” and copy paste the 2 or 3 commands to do it (or in the case of mint or Ubuntu do it via GUI) its simply easier to rave about a feature thats advertised on the website than to look for another 5 minutes and realise that its the norm.

Or in non Linux terms: it's easier to look at the packaging of the $5 bottle and say its the best because it says leak proof than to try the $5 Aluminium isolating coffee cup from recycled Metal and anti spill over opening and actually make a fair comparison

You are welcome to spoon feed all of the linus fans with the flavour of the month distro"s, or now I guess with steam os. Less than 5% of them will be worth it. It's very ironic to end up at linux due to someone like linus.

How did you even get that conclusion from my post? Like I said and maybe you missed it in my first comment... But he's "Linux choices and info could defiantly be improved"

I don't think steam OS is a great choice for a general use desktop. Far from it actually. I don't even use many of the hyped distros my self. Mainly staying on opensue, alpine and some others for my stuff.

Still saying "Linux" and mentioning KDE being viable for desktop use is a good thing.

[-] eremophila@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I'm happy for linus to send his zombies to distro's (other than what I use), but they will just annoy people on forums etc, and blame linux after they use ai to f*ck it all up. You can only watch trashtubers for so long without clearly being trash yourself. We all start somewhere, and internet searches push people towards the biggest/trashiest channels, but anyone who is genuinely interested in tech, and wants it to improve in meaningful ways, will soon move on from linus et al.

No doubt KDE appreciates the shout out for being "viable" ...

I do think this is in general good advertising for Linux.

Sort of, but unfortunately the Steam Machine is supply constrained, so more advertising for the SM specifically isn't that helpful. Maybe he should try other Linux OEMs too, or beginner friendly KDE distros in general like Kubuntu

[-] kylian0087@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

Talking about it running Linux and that being a viable option defiantly is. It is the Linux aspect I am referring to no at all the SM.
