Funny, I had the opposite reaction. I quit reading Banks after that book! I did appreciate the subplot with the companion bot, but Gurgeh was so unsympathetic that I really just couldn't enjoy it.
That's understandable- he's not a particularly likeable character. From what I've heard, the other Culture books are more action packed if that's something you'd prefer ^.^ I've got Use of Weapons to try next, which I've heard is very good.
Another person had also told me that the series picks up a bit after this one. I'm planning to request Use of Weapons from the library at some point (not this month, I've got too many books checked out right now). Here's hoping I like the next one more!
