No leger board is a good thing in this case, probably means it's built as a cantilever setup like this

And the tiny supports probably aren't needed at all and they just made a funny photo.

Edit: i have no idea if that far of a span is appropriate for that type of cantilever.

That would explain the use of 2x12 (2x10 maybe?) lumber and how it kinda disappears into the house past the siding. Still, I wouldn't want that lumber exposed to the elements like that - it's like asking for moisture to penetrate the structure.

Yeah, the bare wood is certainly a choice if that carries through into the house.
