The US has been sabre-rattling about Iran for decades but they didn't attack for the reasons you stated. However, right now the guy calling the shots in America is just that stupid, and he surrounds himself with people who are either as stupid as he is or abject cowards who won't oppose him.
It's largely this. On top of it, the secretary of defense is 15 years old mentally and truly believes he is the most hardcore and toughest most badass person ever. Add on the delusion that a deity is on your team and you get the shitshow we find ourselves in.
