I know it’s some sort of gas bottle, but I’m hoping someone can be more specific based on the brass tap on top.

My suspicion is it could be almost ANY kind of gas cylinder.

Least likely is AIR. Doesn't look like a scuba cylinder.

That leaves medical, military, and scientific applications. Where are you, and where was this cylinder found?

Australia, and in the bush adjacent to my house. I live on acreage with no neighbours in that direction. Won’t be military, not even historically.
