Not a specialist but there’s a weird culture in Japan with manga about boys that love boys (shonen ? (I think shonen are manga about a boys that save the world, like Naruto. Edit: Found it : BL shonen but I was specifically thinking Yaoi) Someone better than could give you the specific name). IIRC they’re specifically developed for women and could have really compelling story line. So maybe this could not be about gays but a clear preference for this type of medium.
